The football is in full flow in Japan, and Andre-Pierre Gignac scored a second-half hat-trick as France came from behind three times to beat South Africa 4-3 and keep their Olympic hopes alive.

Having lost their Group A opener, France looked to be heading out until former Marseille striker Gignac completed his treble from the penalty spot to level for a third time on 85 minutes, before Teji Savanier grabbed an injury-time winner.

Gignac, who currently plays for Tigres in Mexico, is now top scorer in Tokyo with four goals from two matches.

Defending champions Brazil were held to a goalless draw by Ivory Coast in Group D, after Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz was sent off for a trip on former Leeds winger Max Gradel on just 13 minutes - Brazil, captained by former Barcelona defender Dani Alves, still top the group.

Elsewhere, Facundo Medina gave Argentina their first win of the Olympics with a 1-0 victory over Egypt, while Burnley striker Chris Wood was on target in New Zealand's 3-2 loss to Honduras.

Judo bronze is GB's first Tokyo 2020 medal

    Simon Gleave
    Head of sports analysis, Gracenote

Chelsea Giles' bronze means Great Britain have won a judo medal at three successive Olympic Games for the first time since Barcelona 1992. The British judo team drew a blank at three of the four Olympic Games from 1996 to 2008, winning only a silver medal at Sydney 2000.It is GB's men who have spearheaded this turnaround in judo success winning a medal at each of the last three Olympics while the men have won none. Women have won Great Britain's last eight Olympic medals in judo.

It is 29 years since a British man last won an Olympic medal in judo (Raymond Stevens, Silver, 100kg, Barcelona 1992). Great Britain is still waiting for its first Olympic gold in judo.

Jay Baker: Imagine being a 14 year old and competing in a field with Katie Ledecky! I'm supporting Summer McItosh.

Hotairmail: These swimmers make front crawl look easy. I'm out of breath after 25 metres.

Carol: The Olympic swimmers always look so graceful. When I try doing the front crawl, I resemble a distressed octopus, with my flailing arms and legs.

Fancy yourself as a swimmer? BBC Radio 1's Reece Parkinson thought he would take on British star Adam Peaty in an impromptu race, with Peaty promising to pull out of the Olympics if he lost.

No offence Reece, but we're kind of hoping Adam won this one...

That tees us up nicely for the women's 400m freestyle world record holder Katie Ledecky, though the American hits the turn in her heat behind 14-year-old Summer McIntosh of Canada.

American Ledecky, a five-time Olympic gold medalist, does come through and has the time to coast home to finish in first position. Teenager McIntosh, after that fast start, finishes third in the heat.

We've seen a few records go in the pool today.

South Africa's Tatjana Schoenmaker set a new Olympic record time of 1:04.82 to storm through the women's 100m breaststroke heats.

And Canada's Kylie Masse also registered an Olympic record in the 100m women's backstroke heats, only to see Kaylee McKeown of Australia break that target in the very next heat.

It's not the first time today Australia have led the way today either... early on Sunday, the 4x100m freestyle team posted a new world best!

    Mixed doubles

What a second game this was!

We finished with arguably the rally of the match, but Joshua Hurlburt-Yu's shot from the back of the court went long to seal a 21-19 victory for Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith.

It's two from two for the British pair now, who have secured their place in the knockout stages.

It was a brave effort Canadian pair Joshua Hurlburt-Yu and Josephine Wu though, particularly in game two.

Just as GB looked to be pulling away, they have been reeled back in

They were briefly pegged back to 17-17 but Lauren Smith is alert at the net again to edge the British pair in front, with a huge roar going up from Marcus Ellis.

It's now 19-17 and just two points are needed for victory.
