"I feel definitely a little bit refreshed and happy again."

Naomi Osaka says it was "nerve-wracking" to compete in the Olympics in her home country of Japan after her first-round singles win over Zheng Saisai in Tokyo.

Osaka, 23, has spoken about her struggles with depression and opted not to speak to the media at May's French Open to protect her mental health. She took an eight-week break prior to the Games beginning.

Chelsea Giles' bronze means Great Britain have won a judo medal at three successive Olympic Games for the first time since Barcelona 1992," says Simon Gleave, head of sports analysis at Nielsen Gracenote.

"The British judo team drew a blank at three of the four Olympic Games from 1996 to 2008, winning only a silver medal at Sydney 2000.

"Women have won Great Britain's last eight Olympic medals in judo. It is 29 years since a British man last won an Olympic medal in the event - Raymond Stevens' silver at Barcelona

"GB is still waiting for its first Olympic judo gold."

When you're playing an opponent you are expected to beat there is sometimes a little more pressure. So it was just a case of settling down and playing their game

Once Marcus found his length he was just too good and Lauren is fantastically good at going forward and taking the net.

It is just too much for some pairs.

    And that's the game.

A very composed performance from Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith, who take it 21-13.

Victory here will secure their place in the knockout stage.

Now they have got that rhythm you will see them using the tramlines and the full width of the court.

Two of Britain’s three Olympic badminton medals have come in mixed doubles.

Chris and Gabby Adcock, who have been Great Britain’s leading mixed doubles pairing in recent years, retired from the sport in May.

Like the Adcocks, their predecessors as British number ones, Ellis and Smith are a couple off-court as well as on it – but their personal relationship began after their professional one.

They teamed up to represent England at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and decided to carry on the partnership after winning a silver medal – losing to the Adcocks in the final – in Gold Coast.

Jade Jones admits the lack of supporters, including her family, made for a strange atmosphere - though she did not use it as an excuse.

“You come out and the stadium is empty but the ring is gorgeous and could be perfect and I tried to imagine my family there and it almost felt like a test match coming out," she told BBC TV.

"Me being who I am and peaking for the highest.. with that kind of pressure it was just difficult without any atmosphere. But no excuses I wasn’t the best today and it’s on my shoulders and I just have to go back and reflect.“

Here's more from Jade Jones speaking BBC TV after her shock first-round defeat:

“Obviously devastated and think I could have done more but I gave it my best under those circumstances but obviously I’m gutted and wish I could have brought back a gold for everyone at home.

"I don’t want to make excuses because a champion adapts and I truly believe that it’s my fault for not adapting but it’s been tough. I told myself my family wouldn’t be there in the stadium but I didn’t realise what it would be like until I got here and it’s sad."

'I got trapped in that fear mode'published at 10:58 British Summer Time 25 July 2021

    Nick Hope
    Reporter on BBC TV

Two-time Olympic taekwondo champion Jade Jones thinks she put too much pressure on herself after she suffered a shock first-round defeat by Kimia Alizadeh of the Refugee Olympic Team in Tokyo.

Jones was aiming to become the first British woman to win Olympic golds at three consecutive Games, but those hopes were ended by a 16-12 loss.

“I just think I put too much pressure on myself. Coming out I felt scared and too much pressure and then the whole tournament has been so different to what I’m used to," she told BBC Sport.

"Usually I have my whole family there so when I am scared when I come out it gives me that extra push to go for it so I got trapped in that fear mode today."
