The sacrifices of chasing goldpublished at 13:22 British Summer Time 26 July 2021

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Too young to join the national academy and live in the athlete housing, Lauren Williams' family made huge sacrifices so she could pursue the sport.

Her mum took an 18-month career break so she and Lauren could live in Manchester near the other athletes. They lived in the family caravan.

Back home, her dad took on her mum’s business alongside his own job, meaning he was working all hours and her sister had to move in with her grandparents.

Williams said: “It’s impacted my family for a long time but I think they are so proud of where I am and what I’ve achieved. They’ve said themselves they’d do it all again.

“Some points of my career, I’ve thought: ‘I have to get this gold medal for them.’”

Matea [Jelic] just got the better of Lauren in the European final but these ladies have fought each other multiple times over the years.

The Croatia team have come over to GB for sparring, we’ve been over there for sparring – so they have sparred each other and fought each other so many times that this really is a 50/50 match.

Lauren built up a very strong lead early on in her semi-final and that was really what carried her way to victory because, at 24-18, it actually got very close in the end.

That is going to be one of the crucial keys to victory in this fight – we really want to see Lauren push the pace from the beginning because that is her biggest strength.

Lauren loves to lead and Jelic will try to find those sneaky counters. We saw that long axe kick that Lauren likes to throw - someone like Jelic might look to try to counter off that because one of her biggest strengths is her movement.

She's very composed in there, doesn't mind taking her time and she's very good at finding head shots from awkward angles - similar to [Team GB's}] Bradly [Sinden], she's very flexible, very supple and very able. This really is the best fighting the best.

'It's impacted my family for a long time'published at 13:15 British Summer Time 26 July 2021

    BBC Radio 5 Live

In the run-up to Tokyo, BBC Radio 5 Live’s Adrian Chiles spoke to Lauren Williams about her journey to the Olympics.

The 22-year-old from Blackwood is now guaranteed a medal after reaching the final.

As a young kickboxing champion, Williams said she had never seen taekwondo until she and her family were watching the 2012 Olympics while on holiday in the family caravan.

“My dad turned to me and said: ‘Is this something you want to do?’" said Jade.

The following year, GB Taekwondo held their ‘Fighting Chance’ initiative, inviting athletes from different sporting backgrounds to try out.

Despite being too young for the trials, Williams' dad took her anyway and persuaded the coaches to give her a go.

"I did the trials, I did the test matches and I won by quite a significant amount and that’s when my performance director said: ‘We need this girl.’

    "And I’ve never looked back.”

    Men's team final

Unfortunately Great Britain's medal chances are looking very slim now.

They sit in fifth with just one apparatus - the pommel horse - left. The United States are over two points ahead in fourth.

The Russian Olympic Committee lead, China remain second and are now just 0.64 behind, with Japan third.

It is all to play for at the top! Huge final rotation coming.

Lauren Williams is guaranteed a medal in the women's -67kg taekwondo competition, but will it be Team GB's fourth gold of a magical Monday?

The 22-year-old is a three-time European champion but is making her Olympic debut

Williams, from Wales, defeated Ivory Coast's Ruth Gbagbi 24-18 in their semi-final and faces Croat Matea Jelic in the gold medal contest.

Great Britain's Giarnni Regini-Moran has just completed an excellent 14.533 routine on the floor. We will see where that leaves GB after the penultimate rotation.

Lovely, well executed two and a half twist.

    A double twist with ease.

That's a routine we need! Well done Giarnni!

    Men's team final

In case you're wondering why the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) - rather than Russia - are competing in the gymnastics men's team final, it is because Russia are currently banned from competing in all major sporting events after a doping scandal.

Russian athletes are still allowed to compete under a neutral flag and that is how the ROC team came about.

If they complete their gold-medal bid here, a flag bearing the Olympic rings will be flown and the Olympic theme will play instead of the Russian national anthem.

The gymnasts have completed their fourth rotation and unfortunately Great Britain have slipped to fifth place, despite that performance from Joe Fraser and double Olympic champion Max Whitlock entering the fray.

We are expecting GB to finish strongly on the floor and pommel horse, with floor up first.

China have overtaken Japan after their vault performance and now sit second with the Russian Olympic Committee in first.

Five releases, all different variations, with some of the biggest release and catch moves which is the exciting bit.

    Amazing routine.

I'm so impressed with Joe, he's 22, his first Olympics and the way he's performed!

He's doing some of the best gymnastics I've ever seen him do.

It's ridiculous if you think about it. The consistency has been absolutely phenomenal!

Great Britain have won no fewer than THREE golds, with the second and third coming just 26 minutes apart, and there may yet be more to come.

    • 03:16 BST Swimmer Adam Peaty defends 100m breaststroke title
    • 07:59 Tom Daley and Matty Lee claim diving gold in the 10m synchronised platform
    • 08:25 Tom Pidcock triumphs in the mountain bike cross-country event

There was also a silver in the triathlon for Alex Yee.

Great Britain's men sealed their place in the rugby sevens quarter-finals and in the swimming Duncan Scott (200m freestyle) and Kathleen Dawson (100m backstroke) are through to their finals.

Elsewhere, Australia's Ariarne Titmus triumphed over five-time Olympic gold medallist Katie Ledecky in the women's 400m freestyle swimming.

And at the age of 13, Japan's Momiji Nishiya made history by winning the first-ever Olympic gold medal in women's street skateboarding.

Right, we are halfway through the gymnastics and Great Britain are now up to fourth.

They were sixth after the rings, fifth after the vault and now sit around two points off the bronze medal position.

The Russian Olympic Committee are out in front, with Japan second and China third. GB were always an outside chance for a medal here with those three teams especially strong so a bronze would be a huge result.
