[Helen and Polly] knew they had to step up after the first race. Although they had a good start, it wasn't the display they expected to put on, so they wanted to step up for the next round, the semi-final, and we saw that.

There is one final race now. Every crew is the same, you leave everything out there. But [Helen and Polly] will have a freedom now. They know they performing as they should, there will be some great opposition and they can just give the best they have got.

    Sir Matthew Pinsent

I think the women's pairs is a fascinating, tactical decision ahead of [Helen and Polly] as to whether to try and challenge the New Zealanders for gold or aim for a minor medal.

So just how do you get in the groove and combine motherhood with training for the Olympics.

"If it’s weights and I am on my own, I can incorporate the kids into the session – I can lift, have a little dance to Paddington Bear, lift again," said Helen Glover.

"I get a lot less sleep that I used to, which I’ve had to factor in. But the balance is nice. It’s been good for my headspace to get a couple of hours where I’m doing my own thing, and even though I’m physically more fatigued, I am way more energised.”

Helen Glover and Polly Swann go in lane two for Great Britain. The big threats are expected to come from New Zealand pairing of Kerri Gowler and Grace Prendergast in lane four and Caileigh Filmer and Hillary Janssens, the 2018 world champions, who are going for Canada.

Probably difficult to ignore the Greek pairing of Maria Kyridou and Christina Ioanna Bourmpou both 20, who came from nowhere to power past Glover and Swann in their semi-final.

They won the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics.

Helen Glover is going for her third Olympic title at her third Games. There’s quite a nice ring to that isn’t there.

Maybe not so the fact that Glover and Polly Swann only qualified third fastest.

Having retired after Rio 2016, it really would be the mother of all comebacks for Helen Glover, 35, to medal here. Excuse the pun.

Glover, who has three children, is the first mum to make the British Olympic team and only gave birth to twins in 2020. And she was breastfeeding and training until April, adapting her training plan around her children.

Weird seeing an Olympics without him in the pool.

Steady start from GB's Paul Casey. Level after three, though he had a decent birdie shout at the second after playing a delightful iron shot into around 12 feet or so.

Danish golfer Joachim Brandt Hansen currently heads the leaderboard after picking up birdies on the first, fourth and fifth to go three under par.
