I remember tipping Selemon Barega as an 18-year-old as a name to watch a few years ago because he's always had that ability to do that he's just never ever actually produced it when he needed to - but now he's the Olympic champion.
Men's 10,000m final
What a race. Relatively steady in Olympic terms but enthralling and energy-sapping nonetheless, and that's just watching it on your sofa...
But it is Ethiopia's Selemon Barega who takes the men's 10,000m crown from the absent Mo Farah.

What a really exciting race that was. Once the first gold medal is on, people will realise there are a lot more medals up for grabs.

It ended up being a game of chess, but what an impressive win, a big surprise win as well.
Barega very much the champion at the age of 21.
Men's 10,000m final
What a run from Selemon Barega!
The Ethiopian timed his kick to perfection and the rest of the field could not stay with him on the final lap. He wins in a time of 27.43.22.
Joshua Cheptegei takes silver and fellow Ugandan Jacob Kiplimo has the bronze.

This is going to turn into a mile foot race, nobody has done anything and it doesnt help Cheptegei this sort of pace because he is not as quick as the chasing pack.
Gone are the days of Mo Farah type last laps where 55 seconds could win you this. The sort of guys in this field can throw in a 52 seconds off the back of this pedestrian pace.
Men's 10,000m
There's the bell!
Barega is pushing! Can they stay with him?
Men's 10,000m
Joshua Cheptegei is still just about holding off the rest, but there goes Mohammed Ahmed striding beyond him. 600m to go. Selemon Barega is hanging on too.
Men's 10,000m
Who's going to kick?! There's 10 or 11 still hanging on to try and have a dig at a medal...

Finally the race is on, finally it looks like someone is going to take this race by the scruff of the neck.
Men's 10,000m
Now it's Joshua Cheptegei at the front with Canada's Mohammed Ahmed trying to match him.
Under four laps to go.
Men's 10,000m final
Joshua Cheptegei, the world record holder, is biding his time and well placed to make a move - it's almost a game of chess among the frontrunners now. Jacob Kiplimo is also there but there are plenty in the pack.

That's slightly bizarre, Stephen Kissa did lead and tried to tease people to go with him and it didn't work. There's not really much pace now.
The sort of pace we were expecting hasn't materialised, people are beginning to suffer here. The conditions are definitely starting to take effect.
Men's 10,000m final
And there goes early leader Stephen Kissa, his stellar effort comes to an end in the heat and humidity with eight laps to go.

I'm surprised that people aren't reacting a bit more to these surges, I guess they've got wise to these surges that keep happening because the pack is keeping a really steady even pace.
Now when it's starting to pan out and the race is starting to get going I can't help but think that the dangers are going to come from people who kept their powder dry and conserved energy in the middle of that pack.
Men's 10,000m final
Oh dear. Sam Atkin is out and limping as he walks off the track.
Atkin wears wearing carbon fibre orthotics to deal with a foot problem called Freiburg disease - he was told to quit running at the age 17, but made it to an Olympic final...

You feel the second half of the race is going to have someone come along and set it alight. I'm not sure that Joshua Cheptegei can afford to wait too long. There's plenty of people that can set this off.
The Kenyan game plan can surely not be to just hang around because the Ethiopian contingent will have too much fire power for the Kenyans if they leave it to the last five or six laps.
Men's 10,000m final
The field has concertinaed but Stephen Kissa still holds a narrow lead as the runners hit the halfway mark in 14.08. A (relatively...) comfortable pace.

International football is often divided by clutch moments. The two saves by Micah and between that the miss from Caroline Weir.
It is absolutely heartbreaking, it made me feel sick.
