It all went horribly wrong for Australia in the bronze medal race. What on earth happened?

A great ride by France, though.

After the USA and Slovenia qualified for the semi-finals earlier, it's now time for the third quarter-final with Italy taking on France.

It's been close so far with the French leading 43-42 at the break.

GB's team sprint silver medallist Ryan Owens on BBC One: "It was a dream come true. This team's got a pretty good track record and it's a lot to live up to, but we've given it absolutely everything today. We can be so proud of ourselves.

"It's been a different few months, hasn't it? To come through with these two guys has been amazing.

"Last time in Rio as a travelling reserve was a great experience for me, it was a normal Olympics. I saw everything that goes on around it, I took it all in. This time, we came, we meant business.

"We got our best out on the day. You saw we gave it everything in that first round, it hurt us a bit for the final but you have to show up to every race and give it 100%. There's no pacing it in the team sprint. Amazing day."

Jason Kenny has just won silver in the men's team sprint for Great Britain and this was the silver medal his wife Laura won with her team-mates just a few moments earlier.

Women's beam final

Here we go.

Four-time Olympic champion Simone Biles is about to compete in the women's beam final - her final chance of an individual medal at Tokyo 2020.

The 24-year-old American has not competed since last week's team final, where she performed on vault but no other apparatus before saying she wanted to protect her mental health.

Biles, who won beam bronze at Rio 2016, said she has been suffering with the 'twisties', which gymnasts describe as a kind of mental block when performing twists and gravity-defying mid-air tumbles.

Britain did what they could but as soon as Jason Kenny couldn't get on the wheel, it was all over.

I don't think they were going to beat that today. Another record for the Dutch.

It may not be gold but GB's Jason Kenny has picked up a record-equalling eighth Olympic medal with that silver in the men's team sprint.

Incredible.

A new Olympic record there for the Netherlands, they put in a perfect perfomance.

Jason Kenny had far too much work to do going into the final lap and the Netherlands take gold in an Olympic record time.

Great Britain win a second silver medal in less than 20 minutes in the velodrome.

Britain's Galal Yafai is through to the semi-finals of the men's flyweight boxing.

He beats Cuba's Yosvany Veitia 4-1.

France take the bronze.

Australia finish fourth.

Here comes the gold medal race between the Netherlands and Great Britain!

Meanwhile, there was drama in the men's team pursuit earlier...

France and Australia go for bronze in the men's team sprint final now.

Australian Matthew Glaetzer, the 2018 world champion has had a challenging period in the run in to his third Olympics.

He was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in November 2019, undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous growth and struggled with calf and knee problems in 2020.

It's goalless at the break between Mexico and Brazil in the men's football semi-final.

Brazil have dominated possession and had three shots on target, plus a penalty decision reversed by VAR.

The winner will face Japan or Spain in Saturday's gold medal match at Yokohama's International Stadium.

The Cuban had a good last 30 seconds.

I think the pace is getting to Yafai, that is understandable he is only human but I think he won that round fairly comfortably.

But that last 30 seconds was alarming.

Laura Kenny: "Germany took everyone by surprise. We knew they were going to go fast, just not that fast."

Katie Archibald: "We pulled it through to second best, a silver medal - three years to try again."

Neah Evans: "It's really special to be here. We're defending champions, there's big expectation for British cycling because we do have such a strong reputation, but there are so many strong nations that came out fighting.

"It wasn't to be this time, but we'll be back in Paris."

Josie Knight: "Last year, I didn't expect to be here, so to be on the start line with these girls is incredible."

It was a brilliant first round. You have to break down the Cuban's rhythm you can't let them get into rhythm.

The risk with that is Yafai has got to go him.

It should have been all five judges for Yafai. His work rate there was incredible.
