Kate French will have been encouraged by Joanna Muir having a lovely round. Very collected and tidy.

She is balanced in the saddle, hands under control, nice and still.

Just a tiny bit slow but it puts her in with a shout of the top spot.

GB sprint rider Katy Marchant speaking to BBC Sport: "Not a bad start to the sprint competition - I feel confident I can get my elbows in I was really unlucky yesterday I guess that's just bike racing. I feel well in the mix today so that's good.

"Bit battered and bruised but all good. Really happy, I wanted to come and get a personal best so I managed to do that this morning even after yesterday. Not feeling 100% right now so pleased with this - another night's sleep to recover and hopefully be better tomorrow.

"I feel hungry for it after yesterday I was disappointed so I wanted to bring everything I had today and hopefully over the next few days."

Great to see him so delighted - with the form that the Dutch have, that was the best any rider of any other nation here was going to have and he took it in straight rides.

    Strong performance from him.

Jack Carlin claims an impressive bronze medal in the men's individual sprint.

Denis Dmitriev does the stalking this time but Carlin keeps him on ice and then fires away to just about fend off the Russian's advances and cross the line by a nose.

Two wins from two for the Great Britain rider in the bronze-medal race and he books his spot on the podium. Well played, Jack.

Katy [Marchant] wisely nipped over the top and got into control and decided how that was going to be run. She had saved a final push for the back straight and that just took the edge off the charge from the Hong Kong rider and it was enough to lunge for the line.

Laura Kenny is the most successful female cyclist ever at the Olympics with five gold medals.

She has also equalled Anna Meares' record of six Olympic medals by a female cyclist.

Kenny joins Meares, Kristin Armstrong (road cycling), Mariana Pajon (BMX), Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli (road cycling) and Sabine Spitz (mountain biking) as the only women to win cycling medals at three different Olympic Games. Meares is the only one to have achieved this at four Olympics.

Record-breaking Kennypublished at 10:29 British Summer Time 6 August 2021

Laura Kenny is not only the first British woman to win gold medals at three Olympics but also the most successful female cyclist in Games history.

Five golds, one silver for the 29-year-old, who could make it seven medals in total when she rides in the omnium and would move clear of Charlotte Dujardin as Team GB's most decorated female Olympian.

Young Albie must think Olympic medals grow on trees. Guess there must be a big mantelpiece at the Kenny household, hope they hang them up like Christmas stockings.

Muir impresses in equestrianpublished at 10:14 British Summer Time 6 August 2021

    Women's modern pentathlon

Great Britain's Joanna Muir produces a near-perfect ride in the show jumping to record 293 points out of a possible 300 - just the single fault for a pole dislodged.

Muir is out of medal contention though, starting this discipline in 31st, but we await the ride of compatriot of Kate French in around half an hour.

French sits eighth ahead of this penultimate pentathlon event and is just 13 points off a bronze medal spot - a 300 score would boost those hopes.

We saw a couple of nasty falls in the first two rides from Brazil's Ieda Guimaraes and Ecuador's Marcela Cuaspud. Both were eliminated and receive zero points for this section.

Riders only get 20 minutes, remember, to become acquainted with their horses, which are allocated at random.

More from Katie Archibald: "I hope my family are still looking, my mum is one to hide behind the sofa. In the action you get the reward but it's always scary for them watching at home."

And Laura Kenny: "All week I've been saying please don't ask me about Albie [her son], I've never missed him so much but I couldn't do it without these girls. With Katie I feel like I'm racing with a sister - I'm so grateful to have her here and her support, I couldn't have done it without her."

    Women's madison

    Team GB

And here are your Olympic madison gold medallists, speaking to BBC Sport.

Katie Archibald: "I've been dreaming about having this conversation - I've never wanted something so much, I've never been so nervous but we've been so clinical with our approach. We had a change of coach last year for this event, we're going for the all round and trying to spread between events and it feels so satisfying for it to come off."

Laura Kenny: "I looked up and we had 60 laps to go and I thought I've not even touched the pedals! We rode so conservative, we've been doing so much work - our coach's husband is the under-23 lads' coach and we've done this about five times with them and we just ran it like that. I've never been so confident about a plan - I want to thank those lads because we wouldn't have had a race. We just raced it again the same as we have before.

"Unbelievable - I've never wanted to win a race so much in all my life and I messaged Jason and said I feel like my Olympics ends today, I love the team pursuit but I felt relief when it was over because this was the one race I wanted to win - I just feel so relieved."
