    Women's madison

Laura Kenny nabs the sixth sprint and might just fancy a go at lapping the field here, she'll take an extra 20 points if they do, but the British rider instead decides to bide her time and save some energy in the legs. Probably wise with a healthy total of 27 points, leading from the Netherlands on 13 in second.

The gap is there and the race will continue - if two riders from the same team go down they have five laps to get back into it but it looks like it's one rider from the Netherlands and one from Belgium so they'll get back up - few scraped elbows but they'll keep going.

The Dutch are down! A few riders went there on the bend, it means Great Britain claim a vital five points on the next sprint and lose some ground. GB move nine clear.

Australia went through the middle of a group that also included Poland, sending several riders sprawling. If they can get back on track quickly they can rejoin the race.

Daley was good enough, clean enough but didn't quite straighten out.

Just played that a little bit safe so the judges will take him to task even through he kepts the splash down.

I think those marks were fair.

The Netherlands take the fourth sprint, ending Great Britain's opening streak but they still pick up two points and lead by five with 78 laps to go. Dizzy yet?

I have never managed to work out how they manage to time the throw in just as the sprint is starting - that throw in from Team GB was absolutely perfectly timed.

Superb stuff from the GB pair so far, Laura Kenny tags in Katie Archibald right on cue for the third sprint and she takes maximum points once again - three from three sprints topped by GB, putting them on 15 points with the Netherlands second on nine.

Remember 18 of the 19 divers will qualify for the men's 10m platform semi-finals, but here's how the top 10 looks.

China are still dominating at the top, with Aleksandr Bondar of the Russian Olympic Committee and Canada's Nathan Zsombor-Murray in front of Tom Daley in fifth.

Daley's team-mate Noah Williams is down in 25th.

Oooh, there's been a crash and it sees Ireland down to just one rider, but the Great Britain team are still going strong. With 100 laps to go they lead the field with 10 points.

The fact that you throw in 'fresh legs' continually it keeps the pace really high and it means that riders are much more likely to keep going in the attack.

Going for the same dive as his GB team-mate, Tom Daley's dive is better but he doesn't quite straighten out as he comes out of his forward 4½ somersaults.

82.50 is the score and he's up to fifth with one dive to go.

GB's Noah Williams needed a near-perfect forward 4½ somersaults and sadly he doesn't get it.

He scores 38.85 which leaves him 25th out of the 29 divers and with just the one more dive, it looks like he's given himself too much to do to reach Saturday's semi-final.

Show jumping next up in pentathlonpublished at 09:17 British Summer Time 6 August 2021

    Women's modern pentathlon

Of all the events in the modern pentathlon, show jumping is considered to be the most daunting by many.

Competitors in the sport – which has been contested at every Games since 1912 and comprises fencing, running, show-jumping and a combined running and laser-shooting finale – are given just 20 minutes to get to know the horses with which they are paired in a random pre-competition draw.

And they are prepared to do whatever it takes to give themselves the best chance to bond, taking inspiration from the 1990s Robert Redford film The Horse Whisperer.

Former world champion Jamie Cooke admitted: “Occasionally I will blow into the horse’s nostril – I heard ages ago if you do that you’ll be friends for life.

“There is always that moment where you look at your horse and go, ‘are you all right, mate, or are we going to have a nightmare?’ You’ve got a very limited time to make that connection.”

Some pentathletes have admitted sneaking treats like apples or Polos to their horses prior to their quickfire introduction, which also includes five allotted practice jumps immediately prior to their event.

Jo Muir, 31st in the women's standings currently, said: "I’ll go over and stroke it and have a chat with it", while Joe Choong - leading the men's standings after one event - added: "I heard that if you tickle its ears it’s going to love you straight away.”

'Katie and Laura complement each other well'published at 09:16 British Summer Time 6 August 2021

    Women's madison

    Sir Chris Hoy
Six-time Olympic cycling champion on BBC TV

Laura Kenny has matured out of all recognition in the last few years, she came into the team as a teenager and she's now like the unofficial captain of the team.

And Katie Archibald is very mature they complement each other well in the madison because Katie is a real attacker and every opportunity she wants to go for it but Laura is canny in terms of energy use. So with the right strategy they have the ability to really go for it.

They have the strength, the ability to go for laps but it's not going to be easy. The Dutch are the favourites on paper.
