    Men's madison

    Chris Boardman
Olympic cycling champion on BBC TV

If you look at the faces they look to be control but you have to hold something in reserve in a madison. Because the moment you find yourself chasing and on the back foot, you can find yourself just getting hit again and again with fresh legs.

We're less than a quarter of the way in, and we've already seen a crash for New Zealand and now one for Poland. But you've got no time to lick your wounds or mop about, it's straight back on and away you go.

We've had five sprints now and this is how it stands...

    1. Great Britain 13 pts
    2. France 11
    3. Netherlands 9
    4. Denmark and Belgium 6

Team GB have got 60 medals. Number 61 could be on the cards.

    Men's modern pentathlon

GB's Joe Choong is in gold-medal position and leading by 19 points as we head into the fourth of the five events.

Up next is equestrian and then the laser-run which is where he slipped into second place in Rio 2016.

Fellow Brit James Cooke is also on the hunt for a medal but is around 40 points behind Choong.

It will be a tight battle for a podium finish in the final two events.

That extra turn of pace, it isn't just about going for the sprint. It is also about keeping everyone pinned in place so that nobody can go over the top.

We need to see more of that kind of riding from Team GB.

    Men's madison

We've got 16 teams involved in the madison so always 32 riders on a very packed track.

And the third sprint goes Britain's way after France took the opening two. But there's a long, long way to go. A gruelling 168 laps in fact, although it's been a very promising start from the British pairing.

The good news is Great Britain have got their bright yellow helmets on and streaking round the track in second place.

Ethan Hayter is just patrolling things at the moment.

Second sprint with France leading the way - Britain in third. They are scoring in the first two sprints and currently in the silver medal position.

They are never far away from the pointy end of the race.

More from Tom Daley speaking to BBC Sport after winning bronze in the men's 10m platform: "I want to say a massive thank you to everyone back home, particularly my husband Lance. He's been my rock, has put up with me and sacrificed so much.

"I wish my dad was here to have seen me at these Olympics, winning two medals.

"He would be jumping up, he'd probably be in the pool by now! I am so overwhelmed with all the love and support back home."

    Men's madison

Up next on BBC One, how about some carnage on the cycling track?

Good, because we have the madison. It's 200 laps with a sprint after every 10 laps with five, three, two or one points for the top four.

To ensure a dramatic finale, the final sprint gets double points.

Britain ruled the women's event yesterday with Laura Kenny and Katie Archibald taking gold. British hopes are resting on the pairing of Ethan Hayter and Matt Walls.

Coach thrown out of Games for hitting horsepublished at 09:11 British Summer Time 7 August 2021

Remember the drama at the women's modern pentathlon on Friday where horse Saint Boy refused to jump?

It meant Germany's Annika Schleu went from leading the competition to finishing in 18th place.

Well it turns out the German team coach Kim Raisner has been thrown out of the Tokyo Olympics for hitting the horse.

She was seen trying to assist Schleu as she battled to control Saint Boy but punched it on the back of the leg. Raisner was also heard shouting "really hit it, hit".

A statement from the modern pentathlon world governing body said it had reviewed video footage which showed "Ms Raisner appearing to strike the horse Saint Boy, ridden by Annika Schleu (GER), with her fist".

It added: "The executive board has given a black card to the Germany team coach Kim Raisner, disqualifying her from the remainder of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games."

Don't forget Katy Marchant was the bronze medallist in Rio.

She seemed happy to let Lee through but she dives down the track again.

She was just pipped on the line. Tight race and tough competition but it is the best of three.

Katy Marchant leads the pair around the track, knowing the attack will come down the straight from Lee Wai-sze.

The Brit senses when it arrives, but can't do anything to stop it. The Hong Kong rider accelerates at the right time to pip Marchant at the line.

That's a 1-0 lead for Lee in the best-of-three race. The second comes up in about an hour...
