It is very tight at the top of the standings but Tom Daley and the Chinese Divers Cao and Yang are head and shoulders above everyone else and stretching away.

Yang Jian, China's world champion, looks to respond and apply the pressure. An 89.25 won't close the gap to Tom Daley though.

Here goes Cao Yuan with the final dive of the round... Oh it's good. It's very good. He closes to within a point of Daley with a score of 97.20 on his third dive.

So it's Daley on 281.60, followed by Cao on 280.80 and Yang in bronze position with 273.85.

Tremendous dive from Tom Daley - three out of three. Exactly what I wanted, what he wanted and what everyone wanted.

He was here, there and everywhere in the prelims and semi-final but not now.

Dive number three for Tom Daley.

Nails it again! He's a man on a mission here.

A 91.80 adds to the 98.60 and 91.20 already achieved. Consistency. He's put himself in a superb position at the halfway stage.

• Britain's Galal Yafai won Olympic flyweight gold with an impressive victory over Carlo Paalam, knocking down his opponent after only 90 seconds on his way to a points victory
• USA secured their fourth straight men's basketball Olympic gold by holding off a late France comeback to win 87-82
• Kenya's Peres Jepchirchir won the women's marathon in sweltering conditions in Japan's northern city of Sapporo
• Nelly Korda took women's golf gold with Japan's Mone Inami winning a play-off for silver and Lydia Ko getting the bronze

Tom Daley is off to a flyer in the men's 10m platform final, but there's a long way to go yet.

Two out of two for that man! Tom Daley is delivering.

It makes for very exciting reading for British diving fans - Tom Daley out in front with a five-point lead over the Chinese divers, who were the favourites.

He said he was just going to come out and enjoy it, but when you're in the top spot, surely the pressure will tell?

China's world champion Yang Jian closes the gap to Tom Daley with an impressive second dive.

Now then!

Early leader Cao Yuan can't hit the same heights on his second dive - and that's going to mean Tom Daley sits top of the standings after two dives.

The Briton leads by five points.

Here comes Tom Daley for dive number two.

He looks focused - and he delivers once again! This is an excellent start from the British diver.

What will the judges give for that one? It's 91.20 for Daley!

Now, how will his rivals respond...

Well this is just lovely isn't it.

Only China's Cao Yuan can better Tom Daley's opening dive.

The 10s are out for the two-time Olympic gold medallist, who scores 102.00 to set the early pace.

I was wondering if Tom was going to show up... hoping .. and he did. No dog's dinners from Daley for his opening dive.

The pressure screws have just had a little tweak for those to come.

Here is Tom Daley for the first of his six dives.

And what a start it is!

He kicks things off with a whopping 98.60 to leap straight to the top of the standings, with just the three men who qualified ahead of him to go in this opening round.

The action is under way in the men's 10m platform final.

Britain's Tom Daley is ninth to go and will be stepping up for his first dive in just a few minutes...

Tom Daley was left "heartbroken" by a shock semi-final elimination in the 10m platform at the Rio Olympics in 2016, a result that he said was "really hard to accept".

In Tokyo, he has found a way to take his mind off the pressure of Olympic competition. Knitting.

“It’s been such a great and welcome distraction for me,” said Daley. “I’m someone that’s really bad at resting. I sit there, I fidget, I bite my nails, so being able to knit has been a really helpful thing.”

Tom Daley speaking to BBC Sport after qualifying for the men's 10m platform final: "I got the job done. It was very much survival day. You can see people are out of experience with the pandemic.

"At times it was a bit of a dog’s dinner – semi-gourmet though, and not out of a can!"

On preparing after winning gold & more knitting: "I escaped the village and went to the holding camp but it is a really long time to be away. Knitting is good hand and wrist rehab for divers and for me it is a distraction."

On the final: "I'm going to go out and enjoy the final, all my dives are there, I just need to put a bit of sparkle on them."

And Daley saved his best until last, scoring 93.60 on his final dive to seal his spot in the final.
