It is a really difficult and hard day for Vicky Holland. She came here with high hopes and was training very well. She will not be enjoying these conditions, unfortunately.

Finally a sight of Vicky Holland.

We've not seen a lot of the Rio bronze medallist and it's because she's back down the field in 22nd about a minute or so down on the sextet at the front of the race.

The tropical storm means there are big waves at Tsurigasaki Surfing Beach - which is ideal for the surfing competition.

With the sport making its Games debut, the first ever Olympic medals will be won in surfing today with the men's and women's finals brought forward because of the weather forecast.

The quarter-finals are under way and include Australia's Owen Wright, who BBC Sport spoke to ahead of the Games.

He has recovered from a traumatic brain injury after a wipeout and is one of the medal contenders.

Summer Rappaport has been dropped. We are down to six at the front. A slight injection of pace looks to have done for the 30-year-old American.

The chase group consists of about 10 riders who are slowly making inroads to the leaders.

They had clawed back about 20 seconds at last view.

"If you want anyone on the front of a chase pack in these conditions it's Nicola Spirig. She spent many years up and down the mountains in Switzerland."

Georgia Taylor-Brown and Jess Learmonth just draw alongside each other for a natter.

Team tactics could well be up for discussion here. They won't want to tow Summer Rappaport around this 40km ride and then see the American pass them on the run, where she is strong.

The seven-woman breakaway have a healthy 64-second gap on a chasing group of a dozen or so riders.

Intermittently we're also getting the odd shot of riders slipping and sliding all over the place particularly on the blue carpet near the finish.

"As they get to know the course - and where the technical aspects are - they'll start to ride a bit stronger."

Georgia Taylor-Brown, Jess Learmonth and Bermuda's Flora Duffy are all very handily placed at the end of the first eight laps on the bike.

Germany's Laura Lindemann is also looking strong. She finished back in 28th place in Rio five years ago.

Anastasia Goerbunova is on the deck. The Russian isn't really expected to challenge for a medal here but not nice to see nevertheless.

"The weather is absolutely dire here. The athletes have got to be really careful where the markings are on the road - it becomes very slippery. This could play into the Brits' hands - the girls are used to conditions like this."

Jess Learmonth is out of the water and absolutely flying.

She was just 20 seconds slower than Norway's Kristian Blummenfelt in the men's race on the swim.

"This swim is so strung out. It has to be down to the pace at the front."

Jess Learmonth is still very much in charge in the water setting a fierce pace at the front.

Georgia Taylor-Brown is in fifth and Vicky Holland was in 11th at the end of the first lap. So great swimming so far from the Brits.

"I am very excited about this race. It's amazing it's got under way. From looking at the pictures there's surface water on the roads but the swim is looking calm."

Katie Zaferes is making a move. The highly-fancied American is up to third in the swim.

I feel shattered just watching this.

Jess Learmonth is pushing the pace in the swim. The Team GB athlete is looking to gain an early advantage.
