The decibels rise inside the Stadio Olimpico. Owen Farrell with the cute grubber and England earn a line-out inside the Italy 22... A safe set-piece and Luther Burrell charges into midfield. The visitors recycle possession... but it's a terrible pass from Danny Care which has his backline backpedalling.

"All the talk has been about what England are going to do. But Italy have come out and been accurate about what they're doing. They have been dominant in the scrum.

    Paul Grayson
Former England fly-half on BBC Radio 5 live

"It is an interesting game from Italy's point of view. They are a developing team, 12 of their starting 15 play their rugby in Italy, so they are starting to develop a sense of identity. A lot of their players, particularly in the backline, are 20, 21 years old and that is fantastic."

    Tom Fordyce
BBC chief sports writer in Rome

"For all the wild talk of 50-point winning margins, England will expect the first half to be tight and ferocious. As Ireland found in Dublin last week, when Italy held them to 7-7 at half-time, it is the third quarter when the gaps and tired shoulders will appear, and the fourth when superior fitness and form should count."

That giant orb in the sky directing its rays into Mike Brown's eyes but the irrepressible full-back comfortably deals with the high ball and also calls for the mark. This contest evenly poised. Italy continue with the ball of testing England's defence with the high ball and, having described Brown as irrepressible, he goes on to fumble a subsequent up and under. Michael...

A bone-crunching tackle by Robert Barbieri on Dylan Hartley and the England hooker coughs up possession, which gives Italy an opportunity to attach from the scrum near the halfway line.

A short, sharp shrill of Pascal Gauzere's whistle gets the match started and within seconds England have a line-out inside Italy's half which they win to set the forwards rolling.

This is the seventh occasion in which Italy have gone into the fifth round of fixtures having lost their first four games. They have twice avoided a whitewash (in 2008 and 2012).

England have lost on the last day of the Championship in two of the last three years.

England remain the only side that Italy have not registered a victory against in the Six Nations.

    Sir Clive Woodward
Former England coach in Rome on BBC One

"The most important message is that there is no prize for coming second in this tournament. England have got to assume that Ireland will win against France, and have got to go for 50-plus points against Italy."

Deep breaths from England captain Chris Robshaw as he leads his players onto the field. Thousands of Red Rose fans have made the trip to the Italian capital and their reward for such loyalty is beautiful sunshine.

  18. England victory a dead cert?published at 12:19 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2014

It is also a glorious day in the Eternal City and, for the fourth season in a row, England fans have a shot at the title on the last weekend.

England have won all 19 meetings with the Azzurri but their last three victories in Rome have come by a combined margin of just 13 points. Last year's 18-11 victory at Twickenham was also far from convincing so perhaps an England win is not a foregone conclusion.

    Andy Nicol
    Former Scotland scrum-half

"After a rollercoaster of a Six Nations, Scotland travel to Cardiff with nothing to lose and that will make them dangerous opponents for Wales. Since the horrible performance against England, Scotland have played some pretty good rugby, scoring two good tries against both Italy and France, and they only lost to France because of an interception try."
