Harlequins' poor campaign came to an end with defeat at second-bottom Newcastle Falcons.

The hosts ran in five tries as they turned around a first-half deficit at Kingston Park.

This time last year Quins were preparing for a play-off semi-final against Saracens after finishing fourth, but in 2014-15 they will have to settle for eighth and no European Champions Cup place.

Although there was little riding on the game in terms of league standings, there was no shortage of drama in a West Country derby which saw 80 points racked up and 11 tries scored.

Bath finished a point behind Northampton in second, while Gloucester will have to regroup after finishing a disappointing ninth.

Next up for Mike Ford's men will be Leicester in the play-off semi-finals. He will be hoping history repeats itself after the Blue, Black and Whites ran out 45-0 winners at The Rec in September.

Wasps secured the two points they needed to guarantee their top-six finish ahead of Sale Sharks with a draw against London Irish. Trailing at the break, they scored five tries in total with the Premiership's golden boot winner Andy Goode slotting six kicks.

Winger James Short went over twice as London Irish also crossed five times at the Madejski Stadium.

Saracens knew they had to score some serious points against London Welsh to reach the top four - just as they did earlier in the season.

And, having led only 26-17 at the break, Mark McCall's side duly ran riot in the second half as they touched down 10 times, including four for winger Chris Ashton, who broke the record for the fastest-ever Premiership hat-trick.

London Welsh played their final game of a miserable season where they finish bottom with just one point picked up over 22 games. They conceded more than 1,000 points across those fixtures.

It was a case of so near, yet so far for Exeter Chiefs. Knowing they had to better Saracens' result at London Welsh, they ran in seven tries against Sale Sharks in the sunshine at Sandy Park, but they missed out on a top four place by 20 points.

Sale's slim top-six hopes were let down by indiscipline - Ross Harrison was sent off late on for throwing punches to the head, while Jonny Leota and Mark Cueto were both sin binned.

Former England winger Cueto ended his career in the sin bin, having been yellow-carded with 10 minutes left.

In a typically fiery East Midlands derby, Leicester Tigers did their bit to confirm a top-four place for the 11th year running against a Northampton Saints side who rested a number of key players.

Jordan Crane and Niall Morris were the try-scorers for the Tigers as they finished third in the table.

Leicester Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill told BT Sport: "I'm not sure I enjoyed it too much. Saints made us work really hard, we probably didn't play as well as we would have liked but it was job done.

"We delete that from our minds now and we prepare for Bath. We'll regroup, we'll freshen up and all the pressure is on them. They've had a good season, they're a great side.

"We've had a poor season by many standards but we're in the mix now and it's just one-off games."

Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter told BT Sport: "In the second half today we were a very good side. The key for us is making sure that's how we stay when it gets tough and it gets tight.

Saracens wing Chris Ashton on Sarries' tie against Northampton Saints in the play-off semi-finals: "I think they're in the position we were in last year, all the pressure is on them, we've come fourth.

"We know the task we've got to do, we've had a good couple of games between ourselves and them so we're looking forward to it."

  14. Postpublished at 17:53 British Summer Time 16 May 2015

Saracens wing Chris Ashton told BT Sport: "Welsh have done well all season against the big teams, they've scored two tries generally before half-time. We tried to stop that but we couldn't.

"We stayed calm as much as we could, I thought we had the fitness over them to get them at the end."
