Speaking of Exeter Chiefs, Rob Baxter's side find themselves on the cusp of achieving their first-ever play-off place today.

Their fate is likely to depend on results elsewhere, but don't expect Baxter to spend his afternoon glued to his phone trying to find out what's going on at Welford Road and the Kassam Stadium.

"We'll be aware of the other scores, but I almost don't want to waste my energy on thinking about those things," he told BBC Radio Devon.

"Making a decision on chasing points is absolutely irrelevant if we don't win the game. We have to be in the lead for those things to matter."

"When people are most desperate, they say the most desperate things."

Ah, yes, a final-day showdown just wouldn't be the same without some good, old fashioned smack talk in the build up, would it?

Sale director of rugby Steve Diamond, speaking above, and Saracens counterpart Mark McCall have been enjoying a proper ding dong in the media this week, after McCall chose to question the Sharks' motivation for their trip to fellow play-off chasers Exeter Chiefs.

"All they've got to do is beat London Welsh like everybody else has done, it's ridiculous," Diamond told BBC Sport in response. "I think he is disappointed that his own motivation isn't good enough to get that Harlem Globetrotter team to beat a really good, workman side like Exeter."

Why don't you tell us what you really think, Steve.

    • If Saracens win and either Leicester or Exeter fail to do so, Mark McCall's team will secure a top-four place.

    • If Sarries and Exeter both achieve the same result, Saracens must better Exeter's margin of victory by four or more points to leapfrog them.

    • If Exeter Chiefs better Leicester's result against Northampton, they will be guaranteed a play-off spot.

    • If Exeter and Saracens both win, the Chiefs will definitely be in the play-offs providing their margin of victory is no more than two points less than Sarries'.

    • Leicester Tigers will secure a play-off place if they match or better the result of Exeter Chiefs and/or Saracens.

    • If Leicester win without a bonus point and Exeter and Saracens both win with bonus points, Richard Cockerill's side will still finish third because they will have accumulated more victories, which takes precedence over points difference in the league table.

    Premiership table

So, this is how the top half of the Premiership table is looking heading into the final round of fixtures.

We already know that Northampton Saints will finish top, that Bath are guaranteed a home semi-final in the play-offs and that, at the other end, poor old London Welsh have been relegated.

It's also worth pointing out that seventh-placed Sale Sharks, not shown on this graphic, are four points adrift of Wasps and still with an outside chance of securing a spot in next year's European Champions Cup.

However, this afternoon we'll be focusing primarily on the three-way tussle for those remaining two play-off spots, so please excuse us while we get our calculators out...

For what it's worth, we were all a little surprised that Exeter Chiefs forward Thomas Waldrom - the Premiership's leading try-scorer - didn't get a mention.

Each went into the last day of competition in with a chance - and each came out of it having taken that chance.
