It’s a game we want to win - that was the message I gave the players. Can we put into practice what we’ve been doing in training? We had a training session where everyone wanted to get hands on the ball and we looked disjointed. I had to tell the players to have faith in the shape. I’m fascinated to see how it goes.

It will be interesting to see how the guys react to six weeks of training. We need to play like a team, this is key.

Many thanks Chris, this is Ben Dirs.  Big night for debutant Sam Burgess, it's one thing being the best thing since sliced bread in rugby league, it's entirely different trying to master the complexities of centre play in rugby union.

Exeter's 22-year-old Henry Slade is outside him and also making his debut. With both of them trying to make an impression ahead of the World Cup - and arguably one centre spot up for grabs - I'd wager they would secretly prefer to be playing alongside somebody slightly more experienced.

That's it for Ireland and Scotland then, it was a lovely way to start the evening. It's over to Ben Dirs now who will bring you all the action from Twickenham.

We orchestrated our own demise. We want to do a couple of things better after long phases of play. We were slow to start but then the guys showed more composure.

Plenty of big names at Twickers today. This man might be able to give England a few tips on slaying Australians before the World Cup.

    Quote Message

There was good and bad. The good was we got in front a couple of times, but the bad was we couldn't stay in front. We’ll look at how we can execute with more calm and control. We need to improve in all facets really. We’re piecing things together.

Simon Zebo, a recognised wing, looked zippy at full-back today. Here's what Joe Schmidt made of him.

    Quote Message

I thought Simon Zebo did very well. He was secure when the ball was in the air, defended well and finished the try superbly.

More reaction to come from Dublin, but here's a reminder of what's to come in less than an hour.

    Quote Message

I thought it was a genuine test in all natures. Physically they brought a real collision focus. The lungs were bursting at times and we dropped off tackles. It was a test of character, falling behind a number of times and having to rebuild. I think we showed a bit of rustiness.

    FT - Ireland 28-22 Scotland

    Quote Message

We're hugely disappointed. Ireland played well, but we came to win. There are still positives. We're going in the right direction. We scored three tries against a quality side. We'll have to look at the defence.

The second half exploded, but mostly because of errors. Both teams have a lot of work to do before the World Cup. Boss at times didn't control the game from scrum-half, his box kicking was poor, and it didn't really happen for Fitzgerald either. Madigan didn't really control the game until about 60 minutes in and that was because Boss's replacement Reddan gave him a bit more space and time.

  16. 'We're a bit rusty'published at 18:52

    Quote Message

That was tiring. A really tough game and both teams had intent to play. There's a bit of confidence but at the same time we're a bit rusty. It's a tough standard to jump straight into. The players around me did very well.

  17. Former Ireland prop Reggie Corrigan on BBC Radio Ulsterpublished at 18:50 British Summer Time 15 August 2015

Ireland were always the superior team in terms of possession but their execution was quite poor. They can't be happy with that and they will want to get rid of those errors before the World Cup. Nobody really put their hands up for selection, but Simon Zebo was a positive, he might have worked his way into the squad because he's shown he can slot in at full-back as well as on the wing. And Reddan has shown he's definitely the back-up to Conor Murray at scrum-half.

    Ireland 28-22 Scotland

Scotland almost make a mess of the line-out, but somehow keep hold of it. It's to no avail though, as a knock-on gives Ireland the set-piece and with it the win.

  19. Ireland 28-22 Scotlandpublished at 80 mins

Ireland can soak up time with a scrum in their own half. But they concede a penalty and it is put into touch in the nick of time.

It's cramp for Zebo, so don't worry Ireland fans. A bald man is currently stretching his toes back on the bench.
