Quote Message: I think Finn Russell has been a revelation since coming in to the Scotland setup. He is getting better and better. He is not scared to make mistakes. He has all the qualities and has the opportunity to become one of the best fly-halves in World Cup.

    Scotland 39-16 USA

Will Finn Russell be fit to face the Springboks on Saturday? The outside-half has developed into a key player for the Scots and Vern Cotton will be hoping his man recovers from that knock to his ankle in time to face South Africa for that top-of-the-table clash.

  8. Scotland 39-16 USA

Despite the 23-point gap, the stats point towards a remarkably close game, in which Scotland just shaded possession but did enjoy much the better territory. Those barnstorming 15 minutes after the break taking the steam out of the Americans.

Quote Message: This has been a sublime second-half performance for Scotland. Weir epitomises it with such aggression. He goes through one of the biggest men on the field. It is a reward for some superb work in this half from the forwards.
  12. Converted try - Weir; Laidlaw con

    Scotland 39-16 USA

Richie Gray and Josh Strauss make minor breakthroughs, which Matt Scott tries to take advantage of but he's knocked back. There's no stopping Duncan Weir from 3m out, though, as the replacement holds off one would-be tackler to touch down.

Greig Laidlaw with the easiest of conversions and if feels like eons ago that the USA were once leading this match.

    Duncan Weir
  13. Scotland 32-16 USA

Scotland's Alasdair Strokosch has had a busy afternoon, crunching his way to 14 tackles. Remarkably, despite the scoreline the United States still top the metres made charts - and Scotland the tackles made charts.

Mistakes destroying USA's hopes of a stirring finish, though. Zachary Fenoglio knocking on, gifting Scotland possession in these closing stages.

    Tim Swinson
  16. Scotland 32-16 USA

USA camped in Scotland's 22 in these last five minutes. The line-out - despite malfunctioning five times - is solid for now. Knowing a penalty is coming their way, Seamus Kelly goes through the gap... Advantage still with the Americans, so is the ball... until Olive Kilifi botches a simple gather.

  17. Scotland 32-16 USA

We mentioned earlier that the USA gave away a whopping 15 penalties against Samoa last week, and already they've given away 10 again today.

That means, across the 150 minutes of World Cup action they've been involved in so far, they've infringed on average once every six minutes.

  18. Scotland 32-16 USA

USA with a chance to bolster the line-out stats in their favour as AJ MacGinty boots them into the Scottish corner. One successful line-out ticked off.

Scotland penalised. USA opt for touch. Another successful line-out and the white shirts have fire in the bellies... tryline looming... Replacement forward Olive Kilifi held up... Referee spots an American shirt straying. Scotland with the put-in at the scrum, 5m from their own line.

  19. Scotland 32-16 USA

The United States, who lost four line-outs against Samoa a week ago, have lost a further five out of eight against Scotland today. The set-piece really not working too well for the Americans.

Quote Message: Matt Scott was on fire last week at Gloucester and he showed superb awareness of where a gap might be. He burst through two weak tackles. He hit it with a lot of pace and reached over. Fantastic bonus point.
  21. Converted try - Scott; Laidlaw con

    Scotland 32-16 USA

This drive a tad more difficult for the USA to stop, legally or illegally, Greig Laidlaw barking orders at the ruck and it's Matt Scott who gallops and side-steps at a brilliant angle and touches down.Laidlaw successful with the straightforward conversion in front of the posts.

  22. Scotland 25-16 USA

"Scotland! Scotland!" is the chorus reverberating around Elland Road as they watch their men prepare for another attacking line-out 5m from the USA tryline.

The attempted drive brought down illegally by Al McFarland, says referee Chris Pollock. "You're giving too many penalties away," warns the referee.

Scotland opt for another attacking line-out.

Scotland going through the phases... Richie Gray attempting to bully his way through to the tryline, but he's stopped in full flight... the ball finds Stuart Hogg, the full-back juggles before fumbling.

  34. Penalty - MacGinty

  36. Converted try - Maitland; Russell con

    Scotland 18-13 USA

Scotland eager to run with the ball, they've upped the tempo and look the more likely to score. The forwards take them into the USA 22 and it's the backs who do the damage, Sean Maitland strolling over unchallenged and touching down behind the posts. Finn Russell with an easy conversion.

  40. Try - Visser; missed con

    Scotland 11-13 USA

Quick line-out ball for the Scots in the American half, which puts the men in blue on the front foot.  Finn Russell orchestrating nicely, forwards punching holes, and this time the Scots finish the move, from Stuart Hogg to Tim Visser in the corner. A 10th international try for the winger. Russell wide with the difficult conversion.

Quote Message: USA are controlling everything from the start of the game. They are winning the battle at this stage. Scotland have too few opportunities in attack. The US are worthy of their lead. The crowd are getting behind them. They will take a leaf out of Japan's book. All these sides have competent rugby players and are well up for this. Scotland cannot afford to be indisciplined.

  47. Scotland 6-13 USA

Quote Message: I have to say that was wonderful rugby. For any neutral, they will be really impressed with the way the USA forwards have torn into Scotland. You wonder if it will take its toll in the second half?
  51. Scotland 6-10 USA

There's not been much in this first half at all, the United States edging the metres made 210-187 but Scotland having made more carries (47-40).

USA have panache when they run with the ball, the underdogs not lacking in pluck or adventure. They're into the Scottish 22. Cries of "USA!" reverberating around Elland Road.

  52. Scotland 6-10 USA

Scotland add width to the ball, but run out of turn. It isn't quite going the Scots' way in these last 10 minutes. They're huffing and puffing - but the USA's bone-crunching tackles are preventing them from blowing anything down, or even getting into the opposition 22.

What. A. Hit. Wing Takudzwa Ngwenya  smashes into Peter Horne and the centre, as will the rest of his backline, will need some orthopedic attention such is the ferocity of the Americans' tackling.

  55. Missed penalty - Russell

    Scotland 6-10 USA

A chance for both sides to breathe before Henry Pyrgos puts in at the scrum. Number eight Josh Strauss emerges with the ball, the backline ready to move - but Finn Russell is horozontalised by Seamus Kelly and the outside-half can't get the ball away.

  59. Scotland 6-10 USA

What a wonderfully exciting match. Stuart Hogg with the footwork of a salsa dancer, a shuffle of the hips on a magical burst which has the USA defence floundering. Tim Visser is his support man, all he has to do is gather the ball and a try beckons - but the winger fails to gather. 67. Scotland 6-3 USA
