That was tremendous defence from the USA. They were tight, organised and disciplined and kept their composure.

Scotland have pulled nine points clear in this second half but still there's nothing in the attacking stats. The United States lead the metres made column 304-299 and the carries 85-83.

The Scots have, however, beaten more defenders and made more clean breaks.

I think both Nel and Dickinson have added a lot of energy to this Scotland pack. That was tremendous play. Scotland have worked very hard and lifted their game.

A brilliant chase from the Scots on the re-start. Tim Swinson charging down replacement scrum-half Shalom Suniula... Josh Strauss nearly over, but he falls short. But it'll be a Scotland line-out 5m from the opposition's line.

This is the first time US have been in Scotland's half this half. To concede a penalty and give US a chance to add to their score is naive. The pace of this game and the crowd have lifted this game since the break.

I have to say, I have no idea what Vern Cotter said at half-time but Scotland have come out energised. It is a different team. A wonderful strong run from Russell, who attacked the opposition and fed inside for Maitland. Fantastic start to the second half from Scotland.

Converted try - Maitland; Russell conpublished at 47 MIN

    Scotland 18-13 USA

Scotland eager to run with the ball, they've upped the tempo and look the more likely to score. The forwards take them into the USA 22 and it's the backs who do the damage, Sean Maitland strolling over unchallenged and touching down behind the posts. Finn Russell with an easy conversion.

USA up quickly in defence, but Tim Visser cuts through down the wing... an excitable roar inside Elland Road... but the winger throws hopefully inside and it's a man in white which picks it up. Scotland on the up, though.

After that opening salvo you wonder what we were panicking about. It was simple and clinical. It was a wonderful offload and Josh Strauss took it on. For once they found space. A good start indeed and it has lifted the Scottish crowd.

  20. try

    Scotland 11-13 USA

Quick line-out ball for the Scots in the American half, which puts the men in blue on the front foot.  Finn Russell orchestrating nicely, forwards punching holes, and this time the Scots finish the move, from Stuart Hogg to Tim Visser in the corner. A 10th international try for the winger. Russell wide with the difficult conversion.
