USA were bossing the breakdown towards the end of that half, winning five turnovers. Scotland had started so promisingly but someone flicked the switch for the Americans and they were firing for the final 15 minutes.
Scotland 6-13 USA
Full-back Stuart Hogg has been Scotland's star man in attack in the first half, topping every attacking stat apart from carries, but his misplaced pass with the line at his mercy could yet prove crucial.

Quote MessageUSA are controlling everything from the start of the game. They are winning the battle at this stage. Scotland have too few opportunities in attack. The US are worthy of their lead. The crowd are getting behind them. They will take a leaf out of Japan's book. All these sides have competent rugby players and are well up for this. Scotland cannot afford to be indisciplined.
Having been slightly on the back foot for the first 20 minutes, the United States end the half having enjoyed more possession. So in the ascendancy were the USA, Chris Pollock's halftime whistle came to Scotland's rescue.

Scotland 6-13 USA
Oof Hayden Smith loses the ball in contact. Bringing a wonderful phase of play to a disappointing conclusion - 15 phases as they battled their way towards the tryline inch by inch.
But the Scots were offside. AJ MacGinty in front of the posts. Easy peasy. Three points to end a fabulously entertaining half.

Quote MessageI have to say that was wonderful rugby. For any neutral, they will be really impressed with the way the USA forwards have torn into Scotland. You wonder if it will take its toll in the second half?
There's not been much in this first half at all, the United States edging the metres made 210-187 but Scotland having made more carries (47-40).
USA have panache when they run with the ball, the underdogs not lacking in pluck or adventure. They're into the Scottish 22. Cries of "USA!" reverberating around Elland Road.
Scotland add width to the ball, but run out of turn. It isn't quite going the Scots' way in these last 10 minutes. They're huffing and puffing - but the USA's bone-crunching tackles are preventing them from blowing anything down, or even getting into the opposition 22.

Quote MessageThat was poor play from Peter Horne. He had acres of time to play the ball. You sense that Scotland are rattled. They are losing the forward battle and getting smashed in defence.
What. A. Hit. Wing Takudzwa Ngwenya smashes into Peter Horne and the centre, as will the rest of his backline, will need some orthopedic attention such is the ferocity of the Americans' tackling.
Scotland 6-10 USA
Whenever Scotland threaten to break USA's defensive line, a player in white steps up to wallop an opposite number. Finn Russell, though, with a chance to add points from the tee but he balloons it well wide. Scottish fans groan in unison.

Quote MessageI think Scotland need to keep calm. It is obvious that America would have good passages of play. Scotland need to be patient. Maybe get a penalty kick and get the scoreboard ticking in their favour.
A chance for both sides to breathe before Henry Pyrgos puts in at the scrum. Number eight Josh Strauss emerges with the ball, the backline ready to move - but Finn Russell is horozontalised by Seamus Kelly and the outside-half can't get the ball away.
Nevermind. Referee Chris Pollock has spotted a USA player offending and Scotland have put-in at the scrum inside their own half.

Quote MessageOh my word. He did everything right but gave a woeful pass. He tried to smash it at him and it was a foot too low. And after doing all the hard work.
What a wonderfully exciting match. Stuart Hogg with the footwork of a salsa dancer, a shuffle of the hips on a magical burst which has the USA defence floundering. Tim Visser is his support man, all he has to do is gather the ball and a try beckons - but the winger fails to gather. Oh my word. What a miss. The tryline was at his mercy.
Scotland have had the better of the possession, the better of the territory, but the United States lead thanks to Titi Lamositele's try.
The Scots are ahead for every attacking stat other than the 'tries for' column.
