In 2007 we didn’t know what we were doing and suddenly we were in a semi-final. This Argentina team wants to do something much greater than what we did and they can achieve that against Australia."

Australia took Scotland a little bit for granted in the quarter-final but you have to look at the three matches they played before that. They had a big game against Wales, before that it was England, six days earlier Uruguay. The big challenge for the Wallabies is how they reignite this team. How are they going to refresh them?”

The Wallabies are slight favourites but when you look at how good Argentina were against Ireland they are going to be very hard to beat. Australia only just I think."

Argentina are bidding to become the seventh nation to feature in a World Cup final.

But just two years ago they were on the ugly end of a 60-point hammering from South Africa and a 32-3 session of doormat treatment from England.

So how have they turned it around? BBC chief sports writer Tom Fordyce has been finding out.

Graham Henry's observation, external that the Pumas should "score more tries" is not even half the story.

This match is vying with an old favourite for supremacy on the back pages of the newspapers down under - the legality or otherwise of Mr R McCaw.

The All Black skipper took a roundabout route around a ruck during their semi-final win over South Africa and appeared to catch Springbok flanker Francois Louw with a stray elbow.

But when the Sydney Morning Herald, external is leaping to defend McCaw against a possible ban for the final, you know something is up.

And it looks like the whole thing is a storm in a social-media World Cup.

ITV Sport have given the footage the full forensic examination and McCaw clips Louw with his hip rather than his elbow. Louw's cut to the head is sustained a few minutes later in an accidental clash with Kieran Reed's elbow.

Long gone are the days when Argentina were all force and no finesse. Los Pumas still have plenty of brute force, but have now injected flair and finishing into their back-line.

This has been clearly evident during this World Cup as only New Zealand - having played a game more - have scored more tries.

Juan Imhoff - their flyer on the flank - has helped himself to five of those, sticking him joint-second in the individual charts alongside Bryan Habana, Nehe Milner-Skudder and Gareth Davies.

But he will need a hat-trick against the Wallabies to move level with All Blacks wing Julian Savea today....

Dynamic. Smart. Skilful. Jeremy Guscott - our resident rugby union expert - has not been shy in lauding the Argentine attack. And wait - there's more...

"The Pumas are on fire, playing with no inhibition and massive ambition," says the former England centre in his latest column.

And here's the statistical reasoning. Argentina are only second to New Zealand in the tables clocking the most tries, clean breaks and metres made, while beating more defenders than any other side.

Australia, who have faced tougher opposition, have not been quite so potent...
