A perfect end to a perfect year for England. History equalled with a fourth victory of the year over Australia.

England captain Dylan Hartley speaking to Sky Sports: "The first half wasn’t the best sort of stuff but we found a way to win. We gained points through pressure. It was frustrating in the first half but it was testament to the guys. They work hard and improve every week. It was a different challenge and we found a way to win. We are very happy. 

"We set out targets week by week. We have broken it down into mini goals and slowly ticked them off.

“We will enjoy tonight. It has been a long five weeks. We have worked very hard together and there is plenty to work on. Next time we meet up it will be a new challenge but it was nice to finish these weeks with win."

Jeremy Hobart on 81111: “Talking of kebab stories Aimee.... I got back in the early hours from a long international work trip and couldn't resist the sweet aroma of lamb as I came out of the tube. Waited 30 mins for my extra large mixed kebab with a double helping of chilli sauce (no salad). Decided to walk home to eat. Slobbered all the way home carrying my laptop bag in one hand and suitcase in the other. Opened the front door tripped on the door frame and watched my kebab fly through the air in to the dogs mouth. Worst thing - the dog ate the whole thing without unwrapping it. I nearly cried."

The reward for 14 consecutive wins? Pizza and beer. England's squad are taking big bites out of the pizza which has been supplied for them. Plenty of boxes empty already

Put on Strictly in the dressing room TV and it's the perfect Saturday night. 

Champagne is being sprayed inside the England dressing room, where the players have gathered for a team photo. More beer into the Cook Cup - Mike Brown throws the amber liquid over Danny Care's head. This is going to get messy.

Asked about scrum-half Ben Youngs who was named man of the match, Jones said: “He played superbly. I thought he put his hand up for a Lions jersey today. He attacked around the ruck and really kicked well. 

And on his team’s unbeaten run, despite missing a number of first-team players: "It really shows where the side is going. The real test is when you are not at your best and have not got your best players.

“To win big tournaments you have got to be able to do that.

“That is a great experience for us today. Nathan Hughes came in for Billy Vunipola who has been one of our iconic players and played superbly.” 

England coach Eddie Jones: "We were terrible in the first half. I don't think we could have tried to play worse than we did. We rebounded very well to get back into the game and, conversely, in the first 20 minutes of the second half we were outstanding.

Asked why his team started poorly: "I am not sure. We were strangely quiet in the warm-up. I sensed the players were a little nervous.

"It was a big occasion today. To beat Australia 4-0, continue the unbeaten record, equal England's record of unbeaten games. Maybe that weighed on the players minds.

"The most satisfying thing for me is that we keep getting better."

Man of the match Ben Youngs: "In the first half when we had ball it was in the wrong areas. For whatever reason we couldn't sustain any pressure on them. It was a scrappy half. 

"At half-time we talked about ball control and to stop absorbing the tackle and chop them down.

"Sometimes there is time for the hair dryer but Eddie just said we couldn't play any worse and it was up to us to rectify it. We knew what to do and it was just about doing it."

Whatever Jones said to his team during the break had the desired effect, because after the restart everything suddenly clicked into place for the hosts.  

Four tries, a 14th consecutive victory.

Australia captain Stephen Moore: "The score is always a fair reflection.

"England are a good side. You don't win that many games in a row without being a good team. 

"We dropped fair bit of ball in the opening stages. We wanted to start well and didn't carry on. This is the end of our season. We will take stock and go again. 

A blunt answer to the next question...

Was fatigue a factor?: "No."

Oh no. This could go wrong. Jonathan Joseph is filling up the Cook Cup with beer.

Jonathan, I know it seems like a good idea now but before you know it you'll be passed out on the sofa, kebab all over the floor, and your friends will take this opportunity to smother toothpaste over your eyebrows. 

England centre Jonathan Joseph, who scored two tries: "A lot of it (his tries) is the case of our defensive effort.

"We were disappointed with how we started but showed resilience to bounce back.

"We have had a great year and have worked really hard. The boys are ready for a rest now."

England flanker Tom Wood: "We gave them a massive lift with the start, they came out all guns blazing and we had to regroup.

"At half time we felt we still had gears left and had to get hold of the ball and assert ourselves. 

"The wins breed confidence. There is a feel-good factor and a self-belief that we didn't have in the past. We work hard in the week, to the relentless nature of Eddie Jones and the coaches."

England's victors are currently collecting their medals. The Cook Cup is theirs to keep. It could have been a different match had Australia made the most of their opportunities in the 20 minutes, but England held on and were by far the better team after the break.

England have shown mental resilience in adversity. Eddie Jones couldn't have planned it better.

Against Argentina last week, going down to 14, what better way to fire up your team? 

And here, 10-0 down, they were steamrollered and he has seen his players come back with skill, brains and were different players.

Nathan Hughes grew into his role. It was nowhere near perfect but a brilliant, brilliant finish to an outstanding year.

It has been a brilliant season for England. I am so, so, proud to watch these players. The infrastructure behind the team is on such a high. 

I have got to mention Ben Youngs. He was man of the match for 60 minutes. That's how good he was. 

He has been incredible this season and has really grown as a rugby player. 

It's a very merry Christmas for those who follow the red rose. A record-equalling 14th consecutive victory for England, equalling a record set back in 2003 by Sir Clive Woodward's men. 

England also end 2016 unbeaten - a perfect record. This time last year, when they were out of the World Cup and in the doldrums, not many would have predicted that.
