  1. Strong words from Jonespublished at 13:56 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2016

    England v Australia (14:30 GMT)

Eddie Jones has had more to say this week than simply his views on Australia's scrummaging.

Upping the ante, the Australian said his team will aim to beat his compatriots "mentally and physically".

    Quote Message

To beat them we’ve got to break them mentally and physically. We know they’re going to come out in the first 20 minutes like there’s no tomorrow. We’ve practised, we’re equipped to handle it and we’ll win the game in the last 20. But I don’t think fear is an element of our team make-up. The players are sharp and on it. They want this game, it’s a big game for us. I don’t think you have fear when you have clarity and confidence about the way you want to play and confidence from how you’ve prepared.”

  3. But he had said...published at 13:52 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2016

    England v Australia (14:30 GMT)

You could say it was Eddie Jones who lit the blue touch paper this week by asking for a meeting with referee Jaco Peyper to address the Wallabies' scrummaging technique.

Jones got his spoon and carefully stirred, winding up his protagonist until his patience whooshed and frothed and spilled out of the cauldron.

With the compliment well hidden, The Australian newspaper, who had depicted Jones as a clown, external on their front page, wrote: "Jones is no bumbling buffoon or jovial jester. He is a menacing clown with a dark side, terrorising poor Cheika.”

  4. He said...published at 13:49 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2016

    England v Australia (14:30 GMT)

Australia head coach Michael Cheika has spent most of this week unleashing anti-Eddie Jones ammunition, or as Eddie Jones himself observed on Friday: “Michael has decided he wants to get a machine gun out.”

First Cheika said his compatriot had tarnished his legacy in Australia because of comments made during the summer. Tasty, we thought, but there was more to come.

A few days' later, clearly still a few more grenades to use up, Cheika said his counterpart had always "operated with a chip on his shoulder."

    Marvellous.

  5. Time to walk the walk...published at 13:47 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2016

    England v Australia (14:30 GMT)

Hello! You're reading live text coverage of England's year-ending ding-dong with Australia at Twickenham, but you knew that.

If the players are as sharp as their coaches' tongues, this afternoon's match should be a rip-roaring encounter.

England, of course, are chasing a record-equaling 14th consecutive victory, while Australia would take great joy in ruining their hosts' historic bid.

Old enemies with much to play for. What a game this could be.

  6. Hello!published at 13:45

    England v Australia (14:30 GTM)

What a build-up, what a sideshow. Verbal jousting, tit-for-tat. Quick wit, sharp tongues. The head coaches have sold this game better than any boxing promoter could.

Once old friends, once team-mates, Eddie Jones and Michael Cheika have put on quite the show for us this week, sparring until the very end.

But now the pair must retreat to the sidelines, bite their tongues for 80 minutes, because it's time for the players to flex their muscles, to step into the fray for this historic game.
