Damian McKenzie's mammoth penalty effort drops wide.

The Lions defence is up quickly every time the hosts have the ball, they don't want to give the powerful runners of the Maori All Blacks any space to open up.

It's messy at the breakdown though, Warren Gatland's side are off their feet and Damian McKenzie fancies his chances from 55 metres...

Last weekend the Crusaders coach Scott Robertson was left drooling at the quality of scrum-half Conor Murray's kicking, and the Irishman is again on point this evening.

The Lions should have a far bigger lead given their territorial dominance, but inaccuracy and discipline against proving costly.

    Leigh Halfpenny, 32 mins

The Lions are keeping the ball alive well when they do have it. Phase by phase they make inroads on the All Blacks' defence before the hosts are penalised for not rolling away.

Another chance for Leigh Halfpenny? Yep. The tourists opt to add to their tally and retake the lead with eight minutes to go until half-time.

On the basis of the opening 30 minutes, Johnny Sexton is playing his way into the Test team.

He is exploiting the Maori All Blacks defensive line, building an encouraging relationship with Jonathan Davies, and his kicking game has been a joy to watch. Form is temporary, class is permanent. Sexton's back.

The speed of this Maori All Blacks side means they can turn defence into attack and an instant.

Taulupe Faletau fumbles in the tackle and a deep kick has George North scrambling back with three home players bearing down on him.

Lions off the hook, though. North slips through two attempted tackles and the All Blacks miss a chance to put some pressure on the tourists.

You can see the steam rising from the scrum as 16 rain-sodden bodies collide.

The hosts win their own put in and then hammer a kick downfield. Leigh Halfpenny returns it with an up-and-under and leaps superbly to pluck it out of the air.

Johnny Sexton then finds his range and hits the corner, pinning the All Blacks in for a line-out five metres from their own line.

Another theme of the tour has been the refereeing, and the differing interpretations of northern and southern hemisphere officials.

So tonight is a crucial opportunity for the Lions to get used to South African Jaco Peyper, who will also take charge of the firstst Test next weekend.

Johnny Sexton shapes to fling a pass along the line and then opts to go himself, before finding Jonathan Davies in support.

The centre has already done some damage running at the heart of that Maori All Blacks defence, but he fumbles in the tackle and that gives the hosts a breather.

It’s been a largely positive performance for Halfpenny so far who’s scored all the Lions points. He started confidently, fielding a high up and under on his touchline, and tidied up well after a wayward pass could’ve led to an interception.

He also snuffed out the Maori’s first real attack with a typically robust tackle. The one blot on his copybook was the mix-up in defence with George North that led to Liam Messam's try.

    Anything you can do...

As soon as Leigh Halfpenny sticks the tourists in front, the hosts get a chance to respond as Mara Itoje is penalised.

Damian McKenzie pops it over from 35 metres or so.

A very bright start from the Lions, dominating territory and starving the Maori of any real possession.

Scrum-half Conor Murray's control from the base is once again world class in testing conditions.

The gameplan is one which is becoming more apparent - set piece, territory and physicality. It's probably the only way you beat the All Blacks.

The world champions are the best running rugby team in the world, and in the early exchanges of this morning's game the Lions have shown they have a good well drilled plan which is working despite the early break away try from Liam Messam.

Jonathan Davies! Cracking run from the Lions centre as he throws a dummy and then gobbles up the yards in front of him and shrugs off a couple of would-be tacklers.

That's what the Lions can do when they get the ball in hand. They have the All Blacks pinned on their own line, but play is brought back for an offside against Elliot Dixon.

    They'll go for the posts.

Well, that was a frantic opening quarter of an hour. Those of you joining us while having your brekkie on Saturday morning might just about find time for a mouthful of cereal now.

George North this time does manage to hang on to a deep All Blacks kick and returns one deep into the hosts' half.

Lots of high ball at the minute, it's tricky to hold on to in these wet conditions.

Silky hands from Johnny Sexton as the Lions scythed their way through the Maori All Blacks defence. It's early yet but Sexton seems to have a spring in his step. He looks like a man who's on the pitch to prove a point.
