Try number four and a bonus point already for Saracens

It's showpiece rugby perfectly suited to Twickenham.

Some delightful handling - notably a stunning offload from hooker Schalk Brits - close to the line ends with Alex Lozowksi going over.

    Lozowski adds the extras again.

  2. Postpublished at 28 mins

    Saracens 17-3 Northampton

Saracens show their clinical side, piling on more pressure on Saints as Alex Lozowksi puts a smart kick into the corner.

It's proper one-way stuff at the moment.

Moments after Nic Groom and Nafi Tuitavake threaten a long distance score for Saints, Saracens are in for a third try.

Saints crowd the centre of the pitch leaving big gaps out wide and when ball is spread from left to right, Sean Maitland is left with acres of space to go over in the corner.

This is scintillating stuff from Sarries.

Alex Lozowski misses the conversion though.

  6. Postpublished at 18 mins

    Saracens 12-0 Northampton

Saints meanwhile have missed a chance to get on the scoreboard, Harry Mallinder off target with his kick at goal.

After the start they have had they can ill afford to miss kickable chances.

  7. Postpublished at 15 mins

    Saracens 12-0 Northampton

Meanwhile, George Kruis is replaced. The Saracens and England star looked to be struggling with an ankle knock and is replaced by Nick Isiekwe.

Mich Eadie also comes off and is replaced by Jamie Gibson.

  8. Postpublished at 15 mins

    Saracens 12-0 Northampton

Northampton looks dazed and so does number eight Mitch Eadie who has taken a big whack and needs a bit of treatment.

This might help Saints gather some thoughts. They are really struggling to cope with the angles the Saracens backline are running.

Try (Richard Wigglesworth, con Lozowski)published at 12 mins

    Saracens 12-0 Northampton

The pressure is relentless. Saracens double their lead.

Richard Wigglesworth is the man to stretch his arm and touch down after a fine team move. Saints have no answer at the moment.

    Alex Lozowski adds the extras.

    There's the first try.

Vincent Koch bundles through near the line and when play is quickly recycled, there's a simple score for Brad Barritt to the left of the posts.

The conversion is missed by Alex Lozowski.

  12. Postpublished at 8 mins

    Saracens 0-0 Northampton

A big up and under from Saints scrum-half Nic Groom goes straight out.

Saracens go through their phases, with Vincent Koch prominent.

There's a sniff of a chance too for Alex Goode to break clear but he's unable to take a neat close pass and Saints stand firm. For now.

  13. Postpublished at 4 mins

    Saracens 0-0 Northampton

Saints have good field position near the Sarries 22 but the ball goes forward from Tom Collins after a promising move.

  14. Postpublished at 2 mins

    Saracens 0-0 Northampton

Some early pressure from Saracens but some loose play in midfield gifts possession to Saints. They in turn are sloppy with the ball. A scrappy start.

Your tips to shine this season

The first game of a Premiership rugby season is a big day for any player.

But it's probably even a bigger one for teenage flay-half Marcus Smith, who is making his Premiership debut for Harlequins this afternoon when they face London Irish in part two of the Twickenham double-header.

  19. Start as we mean to go onpublished at 13:48 British Summer Time 2 September 2017

    Saracens v Northampton (14:00 BST)

Everyone wants to play at Twickenham. But Saracens seem to enjoy it more than most.

They have featured in every London double-header so know the surroundings well, but they failed to reach last season's showpiece Premiership final.

Northampton Saints underachieved last season, losing 12 league games as they finished seventh and missed out on the play-offs.

A win today against a powerful Sarries side would set Saints off on the right footing.
