Sean: Faf, Thor and Willie immense. Not the best performance, we need to learn how to defend but a win's a win and after the horror show us South Africans have been put through in the last few years, we’ll take it.

South Africa captain Siya Kolisi on Sky Sports: "It was a beautiful game. We worked really hard to make sure we were ready for this game, and thanks to everyone for coming out to support us - this is my favourite ground to play at for the Springboks.

"I didn't need to say anything [when England scored their third try], we knew what we were doing wrong, we just had to pick the tempo up and we did that and it worked in our favour.

"We were all part of the win today, all you have to worry about is your effort you put in. So, all the debutants did what they were picked for, what they do in Super Rugby."

South Africa scrum-half Faf de Klerk on Sky Sports: "It's great to be back - I can't complain.

"I think we knew how we wanted to play after the first 20 minutes and those early tries. Great credit to the guys for coming back after conceding early tries, and then we just kept going and going and going."

Stuart Charles: May will be furious at his teammates for not being as committed as he has. Brilliant game from him.

Debs: Daly was absolutely woeful at full-back. Plus Billy Vunipola looked a shadow of the player we remember. We need to remember this is not a vintage South Africa team...not good.

England skipper Owen Farrell: "We got off to a good start but then a few errors crept in. Our discipline then let us down.

"We have to look at the game and make sure we stick together. This will make us better and get the best out of us."

South Africa's Duane Vermeulen on Sky Sports: "We had a good pre-match speech. One thing came out is that you have to earn respect from your peers. A lot of guys put up their hands and earned the respect. We are a young side and still have work to do.

"I was desperate to be back in the team. This green jersey means a lot to us.

"We are happy with our performance but there is a lot of work to be done.

"We have to take it step by step. If the guys work like that then there are lot of good things to come."

England number eight Billy Vunipola speaking to Sky Sports: "We probably gave them too much front-foot ball and too much space around the ruck. It's one of those things, we still could have won this game, I thought we played well.

"It's a great occasion and we don't like losing, but it's nice to have a strong South Africa side and they played well today.

"We'll work on our discipline this week, there's a lot we can work on, but I think we'll be fine, we'll be fine, we always are."

England were good at times - playing away from home, at altitude. They nearly turned it around at the very end. But again, their poor discipline cost England. Individual errors keep costing them, and that's what the England management will be disappointed with.

It's a tough start to be in Ellis Park - England will be better in the next two Tests. They've got a lot to look at and a lot of places where they can improve.

England looked good in attack but made error after error in midfield - not great when you can place a pen between the sticks from 61 metres out!

Faf de Klerk was on another level - maybe because he's shorter than the rest altitude doesn't affect him as much.

England were sensational in that opening quarter - it could have been embarrasing for South Africa - but they fought back well. It has to be Faf De Klerk for the man of the match - he inspired that comeback - he was the orchestrator.

Unbelievable pace from Jonny May on the outside. Great passing through the backs to get May space, and then he turned on the after-burners to escape the South African defence.

Stoney: Once again Robshaw has had a game to forget. He just gets in the way. We’ve got far better flankers to choose from. Time to move him along.
