Number eight Jack Conan gets his first start of the series for Ireland, as coach Joe Schmidt looks for victory in a decisive victory in Sydney.

"You try to get it as perfect as you can, balancing that opportunity with that massive responsibility to try and win a series," said Schmidt.

"For Jack, it's probably as exciting as it is a little bit threatening."

Schmidt has chosen two experienced flankers alongside Conan in skipper Peter O'Mahony and CJ Stander.

"I'm hopeful that will offer some good confidence and support to Jack and he looks to really stamp an impression on the game," he added.

Ireland have not won a Test series in the southern hemisphere since 1979, and captain Peter O'Mahony says completing such a feat in Australia would rank alongside his team's Grand Slam success.

"To talk about winning a series over here is up there with one of the biggest challenges in world rugby," added O'Mahony.

"We want to go and win, but we know we've got to get our process right and our performance is paramount.

"If we don't put in a good performance, we could be well beaten by 30 or 40 points if we're not on the ball.

"There is that fear factor for us that if you're not good, they could put a lot of points on us."

  6. Four changes for Irelandpublished at 10:38 British Summer Time 23 June 2018

    Australia v Ireland (11:00 BST)

So, Cronin's injury means four changes for Ireland from last week.

Prop Jack McGrath comes in as Cian Healy drops to the bench, while Ulster winger Jacob Stockdale returns to the starting line-up, as do Jack Conan and Bundee Aki.

They replace injured trio Andrew Conway, Garry Ringrose and Dan Leavy.

Schmidt also makes three positional changes, with captain Peter O'Mahony moving to open-side flanker, CJ Stander shifting to blindside to accommodate Conan, and Robbie Henshaw starting at outside centre.

Australia coach Michael Cheika has selected blind-side flanker Lukhan Tui for his first start and moved David Pocock to number eight, while Caleb Timu drops out of their 23-man squad altogether.

The news straight out of the Ireland camp this morning is that Sean Cronin has been ruled out of the final Test, having been set to start at hooker.
