New Zealand head coach Steve Hansen:

"We got off to a poor start, but England actually got off to a great start. They played well and scored points at every opportunity. We had to show a lot of character to come back

"In big games like this, it’s hard to have momentum the whole time, they certainly had it in the first 20 and took advantage of it.

On the rain:

"It changed things for both sides. It's difficult to play when it's hosing it down. You're not going to play razzle-dazzle rugby so we had to grind it out."

England were efficient and dangerous in attack but, despite their first-half malfunctions, managed to press England deep on a regular basis.

England flanker Sam Underhill speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: I don’t know what I was thinking when I went over. When it got brought back it was what it was but it’s those small margins.

I wasn’t watching the screen. At times like that we don’t watch the decision, we look to the next job. I loved it. We worked hard and were in control.

You can enjoy these games and playing with a smile on your face there’s no better feeling in the world. I’m glad to be back at Twickenham today and we dug really deep against the best.

England co-captain Owen Farrell: "It felt much like last week, we stayed in the game from minute one to minute 80.

"There were obviously going to be mistakes with the weather but similarly to last week we need to be that bit more clinical and look after the ball better – that’s the difference.

On the disallowed try:

"I thought Sam Underhill had won it for us but I would do. That’s rugby. The same as last week, these decisions can go with you or against you.

"We started looking for that last try and as soon as we did we didn’t manage to keep hold of the ball. There was time still on the clock, so we wanted to look after the ball and be able to pull the trigger on our terms."

England co-captain Owen Farrell on next year's World Cup:

"We‘re growing all the time. We don’t want it all smooth sailing because we want to peak in 2019.

"Of course we want to do well now, that‘s who we are, but we can use this now.

"We’ve played OK, there’s a lot of work to do, but we’re pushing some of the best teams now and we want to be the best so we will use it now."

I was thoroughly encouraged.

I thought it was a transformation in the first half from how they performed against South Africa.

You can do nothing but applaud. They made very few errors and kept the ball well.

They started great with the looping pass from Ben Youngs to Ashton and then the drop goal - England looked clinical. That first 45 minutes New Zealand looked very average.

A whole lot of sliding doors and what-ifs there for England.

Even if there wasn't the five points, as least England fans got to see the World Player of the Year Beauden Barrett turned inside out by a feint and step from Sam Underhill.

That is worth a whole lot of points in your Eye-Spy autumn internationals.

Unlucky 13?

Wales will be hoping so with Australia in town. The Wallbies have racked up 13 straight victories over Wales, a run that stretches back to 2008.

Warren Gatland's side have been close plenty of times. Can they convert that into victory?

New Zealand captain Kieran Read: "It’s one of those ones where it comes right down to the wire. That’s what you want in Test matches and why I always love coming to Twickenham

"We’ve got belief in the squad, it was a 23-man game and the bench were great. The English really came at us and showed it for the full 80 so I’m really proud of my lads."

England have played five matches against southern hemisphere opposition in 2018.

In three of those matches England have held big leads during the first half - 24-3 v South Africa in the first test on the summer tour, 12-0 in the second test against the Springboks and 15-0 against New Zealand today, but have lost all three from those positions.

A terrific game of rugby that I think the whole rugby world would of enjoyed.

I think everyone expected New Zealand to be far too drilled, far too fit, far too motivated and to demolish England.

It was nothing of the sort. Yes New Zealand were poor today and weren't at their best and we all know if you're going to beat them you need that luck on your side.

This is still a brilliant step-up for England, especially seeing how poor they'd been in previous games this year. They went toe-to-toe with the best and I said it at the time - three points is everything. When you're under the posts you take the points and it's those fine margins that we need to get right.

England's downfall lay in the second half and particularly the line-out. You have to give them credit for limiting the All Blacks to a single point though. They deserve a lot of credit for their efforts in the second half, but their line-out let them down.

England were 15-0 up, but could not keep the lid on the All Blacks who, in filthy conditions, crawled out from the depths to win.

World Cup wise, there is plenty there for England to be happy with.

Two weeks running they have matched the southern hemisphere's best.

All England had to do there was continue to drive straight and let Farrell go into the pocket under the posts to fashion a chance for a drop-goal. They didn't need to go wide. There was no need to take the risk.

Argh!
