  1. Until next week...published at 22:36 British Summer Time 17 August 2019

    FT: France 32-3 Scotland

So, it was France's night in Nice. Five tries and a whole lot of positives for Jacques Brunel's side. As for Scotland, it was a chastening night. It's early days but they need to do a whole lot of improving before the World Cup, starting next week as France come to Murrayfield.

I know these games are about preparation but if you go into the World Cup losing all your games it's not a great mindset. They need a result next week, but Scotland are a different force at Murrayfield.

  4. Are France serious challengers?published at 22:25 British Summer Time 17 August 2019

    FT: France 32-3 Scotland

It has to be said, France were excellent tonight. Can they do it consistently enough to challenge at the World Cup? They've showed it in the past for sure. 2011 springs to mind when they were unfancied but came within a point of winning the final against New Zealand in their own back yard.

It all comes down to intent. If you've got energy in attack and defence, it breathes energy throughout the rest of the team. It forces mistakes into the opposition. The coaches will be looking at how we can bring that energy into the team.

Pretty worrying stuff. Scotland just weren't at the races at all. I know it's their first game, but it was France's first game as well. It would be too simplistic to say 'it's just the first game'. It's the continuation of a trend. Scotland have conceded an average of four tries a game across the last six matches. An average of 26 points conceded across those games. Unless they get the defence sorted out, you can forget about it. This isn't progression. This is worrying.

  11. Full-time- France 32-3 Scotlandpublished at 22:04 British Summer Time 17 August 2019

And that's it. Scintillating rugby by France at times. A sobering watch for Scotland fans.

  12. Postpublished at 77 mins

    France 32-3 Scotland

The French almost add a sixth try. Louis Picamoles trucks it up and gets an offload away. Gael Fickou strides towards the line but is chopped down by Rory Hutchinson, and the attempted offload is knocked on by Raka on the right-wing.

    Champagne rugby again though!

  13. Error-strewn Scotspublished at 72 mins

    France 32-3 Scotland

Scotland knock-on after sustained pressure on the French line. Sums it up really.

  14. Scotland search for consolationpublished at 70 mins

    France 32-3 Scotland

Scotland have had a bit of territory for the last few minutes and get the penalty as France are lying all over the ruck. They go for the corner...

What's been good? The half-time oranges were alright. I don't think there's an issue with the attack. The defending is the problem. It's a big concern. Can they defend hard enough for 80 minutes to defeat Ireland? Samoa? Japan? Japan's going to be more humid than it is here.

  16. Postpublished at 66 mins

    France 32-3 Scotland

Scotland finally show a bit of attacking verve. Rory Hutchinson gathers his own kick and it goes wide to Byron McGuigan, but the winger's basketball-style offload goes forward.

You're trying to look for positives and there aren't any. We just don't look match fit. The biggest concern for me is we've struggled in contact. Where's the leadership? There are a lot of good players, but not as many natural leaders as you'd want.

  18. 'Scotland switching off'published at 21:42 British Summer Time 17 August 2019

    France 32-3 Scotland

    Quote Message

Scotland are really guilty of switching off. You need that intent and you need energy. If guys miss tackles or slip off them, that's technical and you can fix it. But you have to want to stay in the system to push up hard and force mistakes.

  19. converted try

Converted try- France 32-3 Scotlandpublished at 60 mins

    Antoine Dupont

    Far. Too. Easy.

The inside defence by Scotland is totally absent as they kick into French territory. Damian Penaud jinks past four defenders as if they're not there and then feeds the outstanding Dupont who runs 40m to score. Great counter-attacking rugby. Shocking defence.

Lopez gets the extras this time. Not that they need them tonight!
