  1. Players under the microscope?published at 19:33 British Summer Time 17 August 2019

    France v Scotland (20:00)

As much as the Scotland camp - and any other national team - will say nobody's place is certain in the final World Cup squad, there are some positions where there is no room for a poor game in the next four warm-up matches.

In that vein you would say it's a big game for Jamie Bhatti, who could stake a claim to be either the fifth or six prop in the squad, as well as Josh Strauss and Jamie Ritchie who face stiff competition in the back-row.

The same can be said of Huw Jones in the centre, who has Sam Johnson and Rory Hutchinson breathing down his neck, and Byron McGuigan, who one suspects is fighting for one of the final back-three spots on the plane.

  2. Unlucky Taylor's long-awaited returnpublished at 19:30 British Summer Time 17 August 2019

    France v Scotland (20:00)

The big story when Gregor Townsend named his XV for this match on Wednesday, was the return of Duncan Taylor at inside centre. The Saracens man has not worn the navy blue for two years after a string of injuries. It's worth just looking at the list to bring into sharp focus the extent of the 29-year-old's bad luck since the 2016 tour of Japan.

    • Pulled hamstring (x2)
    • Ankle injury (x2)
    • Concussion (x2)
    • Shoulder problem
    • Rupture of his anterior and posterior ligaments

There's very much a feeling that Taylor is Townsend's man, so it will be fascinating to see if he can hit the ground running on his return to competitive rugby, as well as bring out the best in Huw Jones at 13, a man whose form hasn't been stellar these last 12 months. Plus, his hair is magnificent.
