Eddie Jones on BBC Radio 5 Live: "We don't get too carried away, we know we can get better and have more in us.

"I was pleased with the intensity of the players and their application of the game plan.

"We have played some good games in my time. The Grand Slam match against France, beating Australia 3-0, we played superbly against New Zealand in the first half last year.

"This was a performance for the 80 minutes but we don't know where Ireland are in their preparation so it can be misleading."

"Our aim is to be the best side in the world and we're moving in the right direction but are we ready to win the World Cup, no?

"We have to concentrate on our group matches and take it each game at a time. That's our focus."

What are they all building up to?

The Rugby World Cup which begins in Japan on 20 September when the hosts play Russia.

England have won the trophy once. Ireland have never been beyond the quarter-finals.

So what remains for the two teams' Rugby World Cup preparations?

England meet Italy on Friday 6 September at St James' Park in their final hit-out.

Ireland have plenty to do and have matches away and home against Wales on 31 August and 7 September respectively in which to do it.

What might Eddie Jones have down as areas for improvement?

• Ben Youngs looked rusty. And that is generous.
• Elliot Daly is a potent threat in attack, but his defence is more paper bag than smother tackle.
• Mako Vunipola came off late in the game. Could England's decision to name five props in their Rugby World Cup squad already be backfiring?

So what will Eddie Jones note down as the plus points of that England performance?

Pretty much all of it, but especially:

• The Curry-Underhill flanker axis was all over Ireland like a rash at the breakdown
• Manu Tuilagi's directness forced Ireland onto the backfoot
• Owen Farrell's midfield role released pace out wide efficiently
• Maro Itoje looked in top form

Ireland captain Rory Best speaking to Sky Sports: "We can be a lot better and we have to be a lot better. That is not up to the standard that we set ourselves. It is hard to describe it without using a lot of profanity. It will not be pleasant viewing. We are nowhere near where we need to be the only upside is that it is the middle of August not the middle of September."

England will have a good night tonight and are back on schedule for the World Cup. How could you change this team?

Ben Youngs can play better, and will do so, but you have to start with that nine, 10, 11 and 12.

I love the forward pack but maybe you might want someone like Wilson or Lawes if it's raining and you need to grit it out in different conditions.

We didn't see a lot of Billy Vunipola today. He's someone we always talk about but he did a lot of hard work while Curry and Underhill were like scavengers around the park.

England captain Owen Farrell, speaking to Sky Sports: "We are still building. There is a lot left in us and we are still looking forward to playing our best rugby. It was definitely fun. I love it every time I put this jersey on. We are building. The most exciting thing is that we have our best rugby ahead of us."

Just enough time for George Kruis to cop a yellow card for a high tackle on Jack Carty.

He went for the chargedown, realised he had been sold a dummy and instinctively brought his arm down.

But that is the last action of an excellent England performance.

This is not good news for England's World Cup campaign.

Mako Vunipola is hobbling away to the touchline. Is it a repeat of his hamstring problem?

Joe Marler and Ellis Genge are the other loosehead props in the World Cup squad.

A carbon copy of Luke Cowan-Dickie's try against Wales. The replacement hooker catches an overthrow and flops over for the score.

But did Maro Itoje interfere with Devin Toner's attempt to claim the ball?

Elliot Daly with a decent kick ahead sets up a footrace between Jacob Stockdale and Joe Cokanasiga. The ball beats them both, bobbling into the corner.

Elliot Daly will not want to watch that again. Bundee Aki produced some lovely footwork but Daly was one on one with a five-metre channel to defend and the touchline as his friend.

Daly has to make that tackle. That is not good full-back play.
