This isn't saying all that much, but that was Ireland's best performance of 2019.

After a shaky first 20 minutes they looked solid in defence and menacing going forward. Whisper it quietly, but there is reason to believe we might not have to watch all of Ireland's games from behind the sofa.

We await news of Keith Earls and Cian Healy, both of whom are seen as starting players so injuries would be a real dampner on the performance.

The positives though are clear to see, with James Ryan and Robbie Henshaw looking particularly impressive.

There's the biggest cheer of the day for Rory Best as he is interviewed on the pitch in his final outing at the Aviva Stadium.

120 caps in green (or whatever the away kits were).

Speaking to channel 4, Wales centre Hadleigh Parkes said: "At times we were going alright but that first 10 or 15 minutes after half time was when we probably lost the arm wrestle a little bit. They are big boys the Irish.

"It's an emotional time for them with Rory [Best] and Joe's [Schmidt] last game but we are building. I'm very much looking forward to the World Cup. I think Japan will put on a great show. We have a couple of days off now and they we fly out on Wednesday and get stuck into it."

Ireland centre Garry Ringrose speaking to Channel Four: "It was a performance to mark a special occasion for our squad. It is a while since I played in green so to get back out there with a win is unreal and it great for my confidence.

"He has been the rock for us and has always led us in the best fashion."

They might only be warm-up games but three defeats in four matches before the World Cup means Wales have lost the momentum they had after securing the Grand Slam and winning 14 games on the bounce in March.

Warren Gatland will be concerned with the manner in which Wales were blown away by Ireland in the second-half here as they were completely out-muscled by the power of their hosts, typified by man-of-the-match James Ryan.

After leading 10-7 at half-time, Wales had very little territory or possession in the second-half and spent almost the whole time defending.

Wales will also be anxious about the fitness of Rhys Patchell after the fly-half was forced off the field in the first-half with a head injury.

Wales fly out to Japan next week with Georgia awaiting on 23 September in the opening game before the challenge of Australia six days later. Fiji and Uruguay complete the group

Ireland second row James Ryan speaking to Channel Four: "It was a great send off for Rory Best and Joe Schmidt. If you look at our progression from the Italy and England game I think our intent and urgency was much better today.

"It is a huge game coming up in a couple of weeks when we play Scotland in our World Cup opener."

"At half time I thought it was reasonable from Wales, but Ireland were totally dominant in the second half. It's not great to lose, especially the way we have today, but it's not the end of the world."

Ireland make a hash of it at the base of the scrum and Wales steal possession before setting off.

But the move breaks down when the ball is knocked on. The clock ticks into the red and that's that.

The Irish supporters breakout into song as the green shirts roll through the phases once more.

Wales have been under huge pressure in the second half but they are so committed in defence and Alun Wyn Jones holds up another try.

The danger hasn't gone and Ireland will have the scrum.

It's taken 77 minutes but substitute Adam Beard is sin-binned for an accumulation of penalties.

There is frustration in the Wales camp but Ireland are putting on the pressure.

Wales have made a change in the engine room. Jake Ball off and Adam Beard on.

"Heaveeeeee".

Ireland collect the ball at the line-out and set-up the mall.

They are urged over the line by the Irish faithful but they win another penalty before Jack Carty tries a kick to nothing.

It doesn't work out so it will be back for another line-out.

Ireland make a change at nine with Conor Murray coming off and Luke McGrath thrown into the mix.

Bundee Aki has already been on the receiving end of a high tackle from Josh Navidi and now he is wrapped up towards the top of the chest by Dan Biggar.

Ireland go wide with a high kick but play is brought back for the penalty.

Jack Carty opts for another line-out.

You can tell this is a warm-up as Wales are off from inside their own half, gaining 40 or 50 yards before moving the ball to the other touchline.

But Ireland have their hands back on the ball after a smart turnover on the ground and the chance disappears.

Into the final 10 minutes we go.

Josh Navidi turns makes amends for conceding the penalty at the first opportunity as he holds up Bundee Aki to win a scrum for his side.
