  1. 'We want something positive to springboard from'published at 13:47 British Summer Time 7 September 2019

    Ireland v Wales (14:00 BST)

Speaking to Channel 4, Ireland coach Joe Schmidt said: "It's not really signing off, it's starting off for us. If you don't get that bit of momentum it's always hard to start form a slow beginning. We want something positive to springboard from.

"We operate in a bit of a bubble which is fortuitous for the focus we want to have. I think there is a quiet focus and I hope we can demonstrate that today."

Moving away from the Aviva briefly, England completed their warm-up schedule with a convincing 37-0 win over Italy at St James' Park last night.

Eddie Jones' side were not at their best in a disappointing first half but four tries after the interval gave England the perfect send off before their first World Cup pool game with Tonga.

  4. The best laid schemes...published at 13:38 British Summer Time 7 September 2019

If all had gone to plan for Joe Schmidt, journalists would still be sniffing around trying to find out who had and hadn't made Ireland's 31-man plane.

Schmidt had planned to reveal his squad on Monday 8 September, but news travels fast and within hours of submitting his squad to World Rugby last Monday, several Irish journos had caught wind that Devin Toner and Kieran Marmion had missed out while Jean Kleyn and Luke McGrath had made the cut.

With the cat out of the bag, the IRFU realised there was no point in trying to keep a lid on Ireland's worst kept secret and revealed the squad via a rather hastily assembled graphic.

The morale of the story? Don't keep secrets that involve Devin Toner, he's far too tall for people not to notice that he's missing.

  6. 'It's a big opportunity'published at 13:30 British Summer Time 7 September 2019

    Ireland v Wales (14:00 BST)

Wales coach Warren Gatland wants his side to get "enough rugby into us" before their World Cup opener with Georgia.

The 2019 Grand Slam winners narrowly lost in the reverse fixture at the Principality last weekend, and Gatland says "it is a big opportunity for players to put their hand up" for starting spots in Japan.

"It is important we hit the ground running in Japan and we give the players enough time on the field," he said.

  7. The final swansong?published at 13:26 British Summer Time 7 September 2019

    Ireland v Wales (14:00 BST)

There may be a few watery eyes in Dublin this afternoon.

Rory Best will captain Ireland on his final home appearance before retiring after the World Cup in Japan.

"I think for me it's about making sure we focus on our last game before we board the plane," said the 37-year-old.

"When it comes to the final whistle the realisation will set in but it's important for me and the team it doesn't affect our preparation.
