So, a day of emphatically contrasting fortunes for Ireland and Scotland.

Joe Schmidt's team were excellent. They bullied Scotland physically and feasted on their errors. Peaking too soon? Rory Best over the hill? Don't believe it.

Gregor Townsend presided over an insipid display. He spoke about a team lacking in energy and aggression and that's seriously worrying given this is World Cup rugby.

Ireland tackle host nation Japan next - a difficult prospect, for sure, but a challenge they should surpass.

For Scotland, it's a must-win clash with Samoa. They realistically have no option but to prevail in all three of their remaining matches to reach the quarter-finals.

Ireland flanker Josh van der Flier tells BBC Radio Scotland: "You have to be happy with that, Scotland are a really good side. Our defence got into a good groove, it was tough to attack out there, we got a few nice line breaks early on and managed to hold Scotland out.

"Their backs were pretty impressive but we managed to cling on to those tackles and then get scores when we got into the Scottish 22. We managed to build a scoreboard then for the second half which was pretty pleasing.

"I suppose in past World Cups, Ireland have had a good first few games and then kind of got carried away with themselves. We’re very aware Japan will be a tough threat next week. We played them a couple of years ago and they are a very dangerous team at home and in the warm weather."

Ireland prop Tadhg Furlong discusses recent criticism of captain Rory Best, who played the full match and alongside Furlong, crossed the whitewash.

"It’s external criticism really, everyone within the set-up holds him in such high regard," Furlong told BBC Radio Scotland.

"It’s not easy to do 80 minutes in the front-row, especially not at 50 years of age like he is! I’m delighted for him. He’s our leader, he sets the example and everyone else follows, and I’m delighted for him."

Scotland full-back Stuart Hogg tells BBC Radio Scotland: "I've never been involved in a Scotland camp that the preparation has been as spot-on and unfortunately we’ve just not stood up and we’ve been battered.

"I’d love to be able to tell you but we had a game plan in play to try and disrupt and score points and unfortunately we didn’t get into the flow of the game. Ireland put us under a lot of pressure and full credit to them. Out wide there was space but we didn’t find ourselves with much time on the ball.

"We’ve got the quality within the squad to bounce back now. It’s all about reviewing this in a positive light and making sure we learn from our mistakes."

Hamish Watson, carried from the field after a very nasty-looking knee injury, is Scotland's only injury concern.

"He had a knee injury that we will hopefully be getting more information on tonight if he can get a scan," Townsend said.

"It doesn't look good when a player is stretchered off the field so we'll wait and see later tonight.

"The good news is Jamie Ritchie will be available for our next game - he's back in full training. So if Hamish does miss that game, we have Jamie, who can play open-side, and Fraser Brown who came on and played open-side today did a good job."

When asked how Scotland could start without that "energy, accuracy and aggression", Townsend replied: "That's what we're asking each other."

He added: "The energy wasn’t as high as it has to be to beat a team like Ireland and whether it wasn’t there in the warm-up or a few players hadn’t played for two or three weeks, they certainly had trained really well. We just missed the start of that game which was very disappointing.

"We need to win our next three games and whether the result had been different today we needed to win our next three games. We have to bounce back, play a lot better against Samoa, and carry that on to Russia and especially Japan, who have started the tournament well."

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend is addressing the media in Yokohama just now.

"We didn’t start with the energy, accuracy, and aggression that is required to beat a team like Ireland," he said.

"Ireland started very well and took their chances when they got into our 22. They’re probably the best team in world rugby if you give them a 15 to 20 points start, it will be very difficult to come back."

Ireland captain Rory Best on ITV: "We started really well, we were positive, we wanted to attack. When the conditions came in the second half it became more of an arm wrestle. We know how good they are and we're delighted with that win.

"A couple of the tight tries came from great play from the backs. They were getting us into positions. We know that tomorrow, Joe Schmidt and the coaches will show us how much we need to improve going forward."
