    Quote Message

Awful for Scotland, Ireland outstanding, they've read the Scotland attack really well and defended superbly. Scotland have to readjust their tactics and do something different. It will take some team talk from Gregor Townsend to turn this around.

    Quote Message

It's a lousy picture for Scotland. The only crumb of comfort is Ireland aren't out of sight - they should be further ahead. Every time Scotland get into the opposition half, Ireland look like scoring. The Scots just aren't at the races.

  3. Ireland kicking on, but Sexton notpublished at 09:44 British Summer Time 22 September 2019

    HT: Ireland 19-3 Scotland

    Michael Morrow

Conor Murray missing that kick isn't a disaster, but the fact that Murray was the one taking it potentially could be.

Why did Johnny Sexton not take that, or the last conversion?

Aside from that question mark, a very satisfactory half for Ireland, whose forwards are having an absolute ball out there.

It's not been a perfect performance but there is a real hint out there that Ireland are returning to something like their 2018 form. The Irish pack is totally dominant.

  5. Half-time Ireland 19-3 Scotlandpublished at 09:39 British Summer Time 22 September 2019

If you're an Ireland fan, you might be tempted to crack open a few beers to toast that irresistible first half.

For the Scots among you, well, I'm sure some of you feel like reaching for the bottle for different reasons...

Ireland have bossed the game from the off. They've battered Scotland physically, won collision after collision, and scored almost every time they've breached the Scottish 22.

James Ryan, Rory Best and Tadhg Furlong all crossed from close range, with Greig Laidlaw's penalty the only solace for a error-ridden and weak-looking Scotland.

Sixteen points isn't an insurmountable deficit, but this is Ireland, the masters of closing out games and suffocating opposition. It will take something bordering on the miraculous happenings of Twickenham in the Six Nations for Scotland to win this.

Murray's kick curls just wide of the left upright. Nonetheless, an utterly dominant first-half display from Ireland as the half-time whistle sounds.

    Ireland 19-3 Scotland

Ireland pulverise the Scottish scrum and milk a penalty. In the final minute of the match, Conor Murray will go for goal from the Scots' 10m line.

  8. 'Murray getting the ball on a plate'published at 39 mins

    Quote Message

Conor Murray is looking as comfortable as I've seen him in the last 15 months. He's sat behind the Irish pack getting the ball on a plate and his confidence has grown because the platform he's got is so good.

  9. Schmidt game plan 'working well'published at 38 mins

    Ireland 19-3 Scotland

    Shane Horgan
Former Ireland wing on BBC Radio 5 Live

    Quote Message

It's all the hallmarks of a Joe Schmidt-inspired game-plan from Ireland. He'll be happy about much of this first half, but Scotland have been very disappointing - too many turnovers, poor kicking and, surprisingly for the first game of a World cup, a real lack of physicality.

  10. Watson woundedpublished at 38 mins

    Ireland 19-3 Scotland

It's going from bad to worse from Scotland. Hamish Watson is writhing in pain on the ground covering his face. It looks like he's in a hell of a lot of pain, perhaps twisting his knee at the breakdown. The replays, it has to be said, look horrific.

Losing Watson is a hammer blow to Scotland. He's going to have to be carried off the stretcher - we hope the injury isn't as bad as the footage would suggest.

Fraser Brown, a hooker who began his career in the back-row, is coming on at open-side flanker. It's his first appearance since being injured against Leinster in May's Pro14 final.

  11. Postpublished at 38 mins

    Ireland 19-3 Scotland

Now we get some proper flair. Stockdale makes a stunning break up the left, collects his own chip-kick and waltzes past Hogg into the 22.

Sam Johnson's outstanding cover tackle brings him down - a try-saver for sure - then a fantastic counter-rucking effort from the scrambling Scots win back the ball.

With the play so open, Scotland begin to swagger. Maitland, John Barclay and Finn Russell make telling breaks. But an ambitious over-the-top ball to Grant Gilchrist is very obviously forward and it's an Ireland scrum on halfway.

  12. 'Desperate stuff from Scotland'published at 37 mins

    Ireland 19-3 Scotland

    Quote Message

This is desperate stuff from Scotland, they just cannot get a foothold in the game. As much as Ireland deserve credit, Scotland are killing themselves.

  13. Scotland smashed againpublished at 36 mins

    Ireland 19-3 Scotland

Oh dear. Contrasting styles in microcosm there. When Ireland get into the Scottish 22, they're sensible, powerful, ruthless.

Scotland carry for two phases, then try the million-dollar play with the backs. Stockdale reads it all the way and clatters Hogg.

From a Scottish line-out three phases ago, they've gone backwards 10m and lost the ball.

  14. Scotland escape - what can they do?published at 33 mins

    Ireland 19-3 Scotland

Sweet, sweet relief for Scotland. CJ Stander is penalised at the breakdown after 10 phases in the Scottish 22. They simply cannot afford to ship any more points.

Hogg clears, and Ireland impede Jonny Gray at the next line-out. Hogg blasts the ball into the Irish 22. Scotland line-out, and field position they really need to use.

  15. 'Ireland brutally attritional and so clinical'published at 09:21 British Summer Time 22 September 2019

    Ireland 19-3 Scotland

    Quote Message

It's brutally attritional rugby from Ireland and very clinical. Physically, they are so far ahead of Scotland it's not true.

  16. 'Stander back to his best'published at 09:21 British Summer Time 22 September 2019

    Ireland 19-3 Scotland

    Tony Ward
Former Ireland fly-half on BBC Radio Ulster

    Quote Message

How long is it since we have seen CJ Stander running with that kind of intensity? After Stander's burst, Tadhg Furlong wasn't going to be stopped from such close range.

  17. Postpublished at 31 mins

    Ireland 19-3 Scotland

Scotland can't get a foothold in this game. Every time it looks like they might build some momentum, Ireland slap them back on the canvass.

Duncan Taylor makes a cracking turnover, but then Sean Maitland gets isolated on the opposite flank. Jordan Larmour gets over ball brilliantly, Maitland is isolated, and Ireland have the penalty.

Peter O'Mahony has gone off for treatment with Jack Conan coming on.

  18. converted try

It's so clinical again from Ireland. They've scored a try every time they've been in the Scottish 22.

CJ Stander makes a massive carry off the back of the scrum, and two phases later, the delightfully abrasive Tadhg Furlong powers his way to Ireland's third touch-down.

Sexton, again, is prone with medics treating him as his team-mates celebrate, so Conor Murray slots the conversion.

  19. End to endpublished at 25 mins

    Ireland 12-3 Scotland

Wow. From 22 to 22, Ireland have a glorious attacking opportunity.

Jacob Stockdale will be the most relieved man in Yokohama after he fumbled a kick into touch on the Irish 22.

Scotland cough it up in midfield, Farrell hacks it all the way to the Scottish line. Hogg tracks it back, it looks like it's going over the whitewash, but it hits the bottom of the post.

Hogg gets wrapped up and tackled behind his own line. Scrum-five Ireland. You wouldn't bet against a third try here.

  20. 'Irish defence too tight'published at 09:12 British Summer Time 22 September 2019

    Ireland 12-3 Scotland

    Shane Horgan
Former Ireland wing on BBC Radio 5 Live

    Quote Message

Scotland really needed those three points. It wasn't because of brilliant play, the Irish defence seemed too tight and it's maybe something Scotland can exploit later in the game.
