And so the tournament ended in sudden death.

The first to score in two 10-minute halves would win the tournament. England captain Owen Farrell had the chance to end it with a penalty early in the first half but his uncharacteristic struggles from the tee continued.

Eventually Farrell took his opportunity in the second half and England brought their autumn to an end with a second trophy, having won the Six Nations in October.

If you missed it, read how it all went down in Mike Henson's match report.

But the French came to play and they came to win.

Fly-half Matthieu Jalibert was the epitome of French flair as he dummied and darted between defenders to send the ball to Brice Dulin for an unexpected opening try.

Unprecedented scenes continued as Owen Farrell missed three penalty kicks.

But England somehow still managed to come from seven points down with a few minutes remaining thanks to Luke Cowan-Dickie's try and Farrell's conversion.

There was plenty to talk about before the match.

Two thousand fans, including 400 NHS workers who got free tickets, were returning to Twickenham to watch England for the first time since March.

France were forced into fielding a side with just 68 caps with around 25 players unavailable because of an agreement with the country's Top14 league.

Well, what an end to the year that was.

The Autumn Nations Cup was cobbled together because coronavirus restrictions meant southern hemisphere sides couldn't do their usual tours of the north.

It has had its ups and downs - Fiji being unable to play any of their group games because of a coronavirus outbreak falling firmly in the latter category.

But it has certainly ended on a high.

    England win Autumn Nations Cup

France manager Raphael Ibanez told Amazon Prime he was only feeling pride for his inexperienced players:

"We couldn't get away with a win but the boys delivered so much for more than 80 minutes.

"We congratulate them, congratulations to England as well. We've learned a lot from that game.

"The good thing is we have so many talented and promising players and I think they were outstanding today.

"It is a great opportunity for us as a coaching staff to be able to see the players who can perform at the highest level. It's very promising for the future."

Owen Farrell, who kicked England's winning penalty, told Amazon Prime: "They gave me a few chances of winning it but I didn't make them. I am thankful we got the win, the boys deserved it after that second-half performance. There is always stuff to get better at. I thought the attitude in the second half, and when we were under pressure, to get two shots at goal to win it was a great effort.

"It has been a good block for us, nine weeks together."

    England win Autumn Nations Cup

England head coach Eddie Jones told Amazon Prime: "Great credit to France, they have a young team but played with no fear.

"I was so pleased with the players in the second half, we were getting stronger and stronger and the finishers did a superb job - apart from Joe Marler, no one had more than 10 caps.

"We were just 2/3% off. Missing a few balls off the ground, slow on a few clean outs. We needed to sharpen up and the players knew that. Their application was outstanding.

"We collect a lot of data and the difference between the top team and those players out there today is minimal.

"You had 2,000 fans here and it was fantastic the noise they made. It was a great game of rugby."

Man of the match Billy Vunipola has been caught topless in the tunnel by the TV cameras.

He's left the dressing room celebrations for a phone call. The number eight recently became a father so maybe he's having a chat with his newborn.

Selevasio Tolofua is waiting in the background to swap shirts with Vunipola. It was the 23-year-old's international debut today and he wants a memento. A very cute moment as he timidly steps in to grab the shirt, not wanting to interrupt Vunipola's call.

England's Maro Itoje, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "It was a tough game, we didn't play our best. But we showed a massive amount of resilience to turn that game around. I feel good - I could have played another half without feeling too tired.

"We really had to be sharp. It was sudden death, a lapse in concentration and you can lose the game. Everyone was on the toes and you had to be on it, luckily we were.

"We didn't play as good as we wanted to but all these things are learning experiences. The overarching message is we showed resilience."

We could really break down their performance and say England didn't play well, but one thing England have told us in 2020 is that they know how to win games. It's can they take that going forward?

England will have a target on their back, the other teams are playing catch-up.

France played really well and probably better rugby, but given the pressures England were under in that last 20 minutes, I saw a different character in that England side that maybe hasn't been to the fore - they had to dig themselves out of a hole.

Owen Farrell has to hand out the medals to his team-mates, presumably because they're in a coronavirus bubbles.

He seems to be finding it very amusing. Pretty much every single player laughs as they bow their necks for him to present their new silverware.

Try-scorer Luke Cowan-Dickie elicits the biggest laugh from his skipper.
