What Scotland need to do is address the weaknesses that have been in the other games, in and around the opposition 22. They have to come away with points and build the pressure on France.

    France v Scotland (20:00)

For the uninitiated, this may take some explaining.

While in Rome to play Italy in round one, some French players - allegedly - went out for waffles, which would seem like a fairly clear perforation of their Covid-19 bubble.

This came to light as coronavirus ripped through the France camp several weeks later, leading to the postponement of this very fixture.

And yesterday was, rather poetically, International Waffle Day.

Cue this tweet from the French Federation. Banter or out of order? You be the judge.

Very strong "no' the night, pal" bouncer vibes from Stuart Hogg at the pre-match coin toss.

Wayne Barnes, arguably the finest referee in world rugby, has the whistle tonight.

  6. Will Scotland miss Maitland?published at 19:16 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2021

    France v Scotland (20:00)

I would not care to second-guess Gregor Townsend, but I'd absolutely have expected Maitland to start tonight had he been available.

He is excellent in the air and defensively clever - two attributes that will be in high demand against the French.

Oh, and he's scored four tries in his past five Tests versus Les Bleus.

Understandably, a lot of people are very unhappy about this. Not least, you'd imagine, the players themselves.

Particularly since Scotland are totally blameless in the rescheduling of the match.

Here are two former Scotland captains - both of whom will be on your telly shortly - who are not holding back.

  8. Shorn of Seanpublished at 19:13 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2021

    France v Scotland (20:00)

I could spend the entirety of this live text trying to explain why Sean Maitland isn't playing for Scotland tonight. Here is as concise a breakdown as my brain can muster:

The match, originally scheduled for 28 February, was postponed due to a Covid-19 outbreak in the French camp.

It now takes place outside of World Rugby's designated international window.

That means clubs in England and France are under no obligation to release their players for Scotland duty.

Those English clubs sought compensation along the same lines as what they are paid for England players by the RFU.

Some sort of deal was reached between the clubs, Six Nations and Scottish Rugby - but that deal was limited to five players.

Maitland is the highest-profile casualty of this quota. Fellow Saracen Duncan Taylor and Bath's Jamie Bhatti also miss out.

    France v Scotland (20:00)

Noswaith dda (have I said that right?) to all of our Welsh audience tonight, who will be hoping and praying Scotland can do them an almighty turn.

Wales, of course, scalped England on the last day of the 1999 tournament, handing Scotland the final Five Nations title. Remember the ballerina buffalo that was Scott Gibbs careering through England's line at Wembley? That year also marked the Scots' most recent win on French soil.

There have, I'm told, been unprecedented sales of Saltires and kilts in the valleys this week...

  10. How the title will be decidedpublished at 19:07 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2021

    France v Scotland (20:00)

So, after France sensationally roared back to stun Wales last Saturday, they're still in the hunt for the championship.

Scotland are chasing their best-ever Six Nations finish of second place.

France, currently third, will snatch the title from Wales if they beat Scotland with a winning margin of at least 21 points in a bonus-point victory.

Winning by 21 points or more, without the bonus point for scoring four tries, would not be enough for France to lift the trophy.

Scotland need a win by eight or more, while denying France a bonus point, to clinch second place.

    Clear? Good.

Roll up, roll up, it's the Six Nations finale.

Welcome along to our live coverage of France v Scotland, a Test played against the backdrop of controversy, coronavirus, and, er, waffles (I'll explain in a bit).

This is a corker of an occasion, even without 80,000 punters teeming inside Stade de France. The title is at stake. And tries are a must.

BBC Scotland's rugby presenter Andy Burke has even rocked up in the Glasgow office with a slick home-trimmed hairdo specially for tonight.
