    France 13-10 Scotland

Romain Ntamack kicks off and we're back under way. Big, big ask for Scotland to cover for their sin-binned captain.

We see it in the European Cups, when teams need a bonus point they start playing differently, and tonight it's not just the bonus point, it's the 21-point margin too. And I think for a lot of that half France were scrambled in their heads. I think they sorted themselves out for the second half of that first 40, but for the first part they were all over the place.

The half-time stats show the territory is split exactly 50-50.

Scotland were in the ascendancy for the opening quarter; France for the second.

Big defensive shift so far from Jamie Ritchie, who has made 10 tackles already.

  7. Scotland in microcosmpublished at 20:55 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2021

    HT: France 13-10 Scotland

That felt like a mini summation of Scotland's championship.

A lot of good, but plenty maddening bad.

Shipping 11 penalties in 40 minutes of rugby is an absolute killer. It cedes momentum and field position and eventually, points. Now, Scotland are down to 14 men for the first 10 minutes of the new half.

But, there are positives, too. Scotland held firm at the death there, and they have looked capable of hurting France when they make it downfield.

  8. Scotland 'gifting opportunities'published at 20:54 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2021

    Quote Message

Scotland were in total control of the game for 30 minutes and it could cost them. When Scotland have the ball they look great but they're gifting opposition teams opportunities.

Scotland were playing the conditions and France were playing the circumstances that they find themselves in. You can tell handling is really tough. Scotland were in control and playing really smart wet weather rugby and France were playing the complete opposite for large parts of that half.

Duhan van der Merwe has 30 tackle-breaks in this championship. I didn't manage that in my whole Six Nations career. You've got an oxen there scoring the try with the pick-and-go. Was it a try? I'm not convinced, but we'll take it

So, at half-time, France are three tries short of their four-try bonus point goal.

Scotland need to overhaul this deficit and then some to win by eight and earn second place.

At the moment, Welsh fans will be pretty happy, if a little nervous...

  13. Half-time France 13-10 Scotlandpublished at 20:46 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2021

Massive, massive steal at that line-out, I think from Sam Skinner. He taps it back on the Scottish side and Duhan van der Merwe boots it out.

A relief, for now, but Scotland will be without their skipper for 10 minutes of the second half.

  14. Sin-bin Stuart Hoggpublished at 20:45 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2021

    France 13-10 Scotland

What a costly few minutes this has been for Scotland.

First, Dupont's box kick is fielded by Ali Price, who gets turned over in contact. Gregory Alldritt goes galloping for the posts, then the ball is spread wide and Scotland infringe yet again.

Stuart Hogg is off his feet at the breakdown, and is sent to the sin bin.

France aren't content to take three points, either. The momentum is with them. And they go for the corner. Here's trouble...

So, into the final minute of the half. France win a penalty and tap quickly. Is there a final twist in the opening 40?

That's a statement from France. They are trying to lay down what they believe is their best opportunity to win. They are trying to challenge Scotland and expecting them to crack.

Converted try France 13-10 Scotlandpublished at 37 mins

    Brice Dulin

At last - at long last - France are over.

Duhan van der Merwe, who scored up one end, misses a hugely important tackle at the other. Damian Penaud slides past the winger on the outside, and flips inside to Brice Dulin who splashes over in the corner.

France regain the lead after a period of massive pressure. Romain Ntamack lands a sensational touchline conversion.
