Wales' wait for a win on French soil goes on but that second-half display was a really gutsy effort.

Tries for Georgia Evans and Gwenllian Pyrs showed just what they are capable of and there's absolutely no doubt that they had the world number three team on the ropes for a while.

However you cannot ignore that first half horror show.

It was the exact opposite of the game against England but at least Wales now have their toughest two games out of the way.

They're not coming home. Ioan Cunningham is taking his squad for a training camp before heading to Parma to face Italy in their final game.

Third place - the best of the rest - is still very much in their own hands.

So join us next Saturday for live coverage of Italy v Wales.

    Until then, goodbye!

Wales head coach Ioan Cunningham said: "We gave ourselves to much to do in that first half and didn't quite start the way we wanted and when you come to somewhere like this, if you don't start well and go two scores down it's a tough place to be.

"But I'm really proud of the effort in the second half, we won that 14-12, we came back really strong but there's stuff to build on for next week.

"When you play the top sides, you have to take your chances, you have to be clinical, you have to be calm when we get those opportunities so that's something we're going to take as a learning curve as we grow as a group.

"We can take confidence from that second half with the way we dominated physically and with the ball.

"Italy is going to be a tough challenge and it's all on next week for that third-spot so it's going to be a tough week."

It's a fantastic tournament bringing together all the best teams.

Wales really need to be in that top tier because it's ring-fenced for two years up to the next World Cup.

We need to be competing against the likes of New Zealand more often to develop so that when we meet the World Cup, we stand a better chance.

  4. Importance of top three finishpublished at 17:23 British Summer Time 23 April 2023

    FT: France 39-14 Wales

France are now secured a place alongside England in World Rugby's inaugural WXV competition in the autumn.

The competition is made up of three tiers with six teams in each tier.

The top tier is made up of the top three teams in the Women's Six Nations and the Pacific Four Series - which features Australia, Canada, New Zealand and USA.

So a point against Italy next week would guarantee a top three finish and place at that top table.

    FT: France 39-14 Wales

Wales captain Hannah Jones said: "We started a bit slow so we can't start like that again, we came alive in the second half but we have do that from the off.

"Our pack worked really hard and they deserved those tries.

"Coming off the back of a good second half performance, we can only gain momentum going into Italy now, so we must regroup and go again next week."

What a turnaround in the second half.

In the end Wales had more territory (57%) and equal possession (50%) but struggled to turn that into points.

Perhaps that's because while France made almost twice as many tackles (175-90), while Wales missed 28 tackles - compared to just 12 by the France defence.

And in terms of attack, France made 13 offloads compared to just two by Wales.

They need to find a creative spark behind the pack.

France are certainly a top team, but I've got to give a real credit to Wales, they had a tough first half.

In the opening moments of the second half they concede to a fantastic try from France, they could have imploded but they didn't, they got back into the game.

They recognised the momentum shift and built on it. There's still positives to take from the game.

  9. Player of the Match - Gaelle Hermetpublished at 17:10 British Summer Time 23 April 2023

    FT: France 39-14 Wales

The France flanker was fantastic in that first half.

She finished her try with the footwork and speed of a wing and showed the handling skills for another try of a fly-half.

Combine that with her power and she really is the full-package.

Wales will take huge credit from that second half performance.

It'll be interesting to see how Italy come out of the blocks having suffered a defeat as well so it's going to be all-to-play-for next weekend for Wales.

And that's it. A spirited fight-back by Wales gives the score some respectability and they can take heart from the second half.

But France were sensational in the first half and fully deserve the win.
