    FT: England 27-10 Argentina

England captain, Courtney Lawes on the performance after England's recent struggles: "Obviously a really good performance, you saw today how much it meant to us. We've not been performing, we know that, but today defensively unbelievable. Still plenty to work on, especially in attack but a good start to the tournament."

On England's red card not mattering to the team on the field: "It's obviously very unlucky that Cuzza [Tom Curry] got the red early on but I think you could tell the intensity we came out with: we wanted to shock Argentina, we knew we could and that just continued throughout the game.

"Not a great start but it didn't matter. We had a great training week, we were just prepared for everything. (It was) pretty much worst-case scenario and we were ready for it and we dug in. We dug in for Cuzza and we dug in for each other."

'Scoreboard pressure was key' - Fordpublished at 22:49 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

    FT: England 27-10 Argentina

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Player of the match George Ford speaking to BBC 5 Live: "I just tried to do my job tonight, the boys put us in brilliant positions to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

"Scoreboard pressure was key, it is a good start for us.

"It is a great weapon [drop-goals] it is probably under-used and it can change games. We see that as a massive part of our plan and it is only like getting a penalty and kicking for three.

"We could have tried to hold the ball and scored, but it was incredibly difficult to do that tonight.

"The last 10 days have been difficult it has been great to get over to France, the boys have truly got hold of the plan and there has been a different feeling in training."

On the negative media going into the World Cup: "With all due respect we don't listen to outside noise. In camp we understand what we are trying to do and it is the most important thing to us."

"There was a sense I had from the players they had been written off a bit too early. They are a quality group of players that are going to keep on improving and moving forward. We will enjoy this tonight and the fans will enjoy it but our focus will switch to Japan very quickly for our next game on Sunday.

Remember where we were just over two hours ago?

An England team with one win in six, two key players suspended after red cards and a defence conceding tries.

What a difference a day makes.

Well, 78 minutes to be precise as Tom Curry became the fourth England player to be shown a red card this year within two minutes of his return to the side from injury.

Full steam ahead for the next game with Japan...

We are in prime position now. We have to remember where England were in those Summer Nations games. They were miles away from this performance.

It is going to give them enormous confidence, it is a lovely build up for Japan and a lot of this team will play against them.

Get into those quarter-finals, not that England are going to be favourites. But other teams around France are going to be thinking maybe England have got something in the locker.

It has sent a message to not discount us.

Player of the match George Ford, speaking to ITV: "The drop-goals are always planned, it is a great weapon for us, especially when the ball is a bit greasy tonight.

"We went down a man early on and had to come away with as many points when we had field position. The boys up front were incredible to get us into that field position.

"We have had a bit of a rocky build-up to this World Cup but I think in the last 10 days there has been a different feeling to the place. It is only game one and we will look to build next week.

    "We want to keep improving."

England probably wouldn't have deployed the same approach with 15 men on the field, but it was so effective.

The defence kept Argentina at bay and won penalty after penalty, which George Ford kept knocking over.

England were the most clinical we have seen for some time.

Oz: With the way Ford played, how does Owen Farrell get back into the starting XV? Or rather should he?

Stuart: Can’t see how they can justify bringing Farrell in after his suspension. England playing unbelievably. And that’s coming from a Scotland fan.

Anon: George Ford tremendous, it would be foolish to replace him with Farrell in later matches.
