It's amazing to be here. They love rugby here [France].

The weather could not be better for us [Argentina]. We like the heat so Argentina will be ready for it.

It is a long way from Argentina so the fans are very excited to see them play in France.

I think Argentina are favourites but I have been speaking to a lot of players and they do not think they are. They are respecting England.

  3. 'We are impatient to get going'published at 19:56 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

    England v Argentina (20:00 BST)

Speaking to ITV, Argentina head coach Michael Cheika said: "You have your ups and downs in the journey to the World Cup but overall I have been pleased. I think we are pretty impatient to get going.

"We have a lot of first gamers and everyone in the team has really pushed those fellas up, I always like that blend with the young guys pushing through. It makes a good balance.

"I am feeling very connected to this bunch of guys and they have made it so welcoming. I've just seen the crowd and there is plenty of them here so it should be a great day."

    BBC Newsbeat sports reporter

BBC Newsbeat have taken a trip to Tref-Y-Clawdd Rugby Club, which sits right on the border of England and Wales in Knighton.

In fact, the club’s away dressing room is in Wales and the home one is in England.

Will, an England fan who plays for the club, said: "It’s a really tough start for England against a very strong Argentina team, with no Owen Farrell or Billy Vunipola either.

    "I think Argentina win this."

His teammate Evan is a Wales fan and is a bit more optimistic about their chances.

"When Warren Gatland takes us to the World Cup you never know how far you can go.

"We’ve had a lot of ups and downs over the last few months but when Welsh rugby is at its best, we can take on absolutely anyone."

  6. 'This is definitely the pinnacle'published at 19:53 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

    England v Argentina (20:00 BST)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

England scrum-half Alex Mitchell speaking to BBC 5 Live: "Obviously we have got to stick to the basics and to the game plan. Do the basics really well and get the team to tick.

"But when you get opportunities, then you bring your positives and the best part of your game alive. So yes it's about finding the right balance to that.

"This is definitely the pinnacle. For me, I'm just massively excited and I cannot wait. These are the games you want to play in. First World Cup, first game against Argentina in a massive stadium like this."

I told you the Argentina fans were bringing the passion to Marseille.

As the England players return to their changing rooms, they are met with a volley of noise from the travelling fans from South America.

Joe Marler responds in typical fashion with a few words in return.

Many England fans remain outside of the ground for now, of course.

    Chris Jones
BBC rugby union correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Live at the Stade Velodrome

A lot of fans are stuck outside and there are huge queues to get in.

We are under 10 minutes until kick-off and we are seeing masses of people outside.

We will have to keep an eye on it. They would be very reluctant on it [delayed kick-off], this is a finely tuned operation inside the stadium but it would not look that way outside the stadium.

    Matt Dawson

We can all see the patterns that Steve Borthwick has introduced and that the patterns do not work. If we were doing analysis on England's game they would be the easiest team to defend against.

George Ford has been very philosophical about his rugby, he looks like he has had the thoughts that something has got to change.

  10. Empty seats?published at 19:46 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

With 15 minutes to go, we are hearing reports of lots of fans still outside the stadium waiting to get inside.

There are more empty seats inside the stadium than you may normally expect this close to kick-off.

Maro Itoje speaking to BBC 5 Live ahead of England's opening clash with Argentina: “I think whenever you go through positives and negatives it has a way of galvanising you. You understand one another more and show more vulnerability, especially in times when things are not going to plan.

“We are fully aware of what’s to come and what we need to do.

"I genuinely believe that come Argentina on Saturday night we will take a big step forward.”

It's been a busy first Saturday of the World Cup.

Italy thumped Namibia 52-8 in the early kick-off, before world number one side Ireland got their campaign up and running with 12 tries in a crushing 82-8 win over Romania.

Johnny Sexton marked his return with 24 points, including two tries, as he surpassed Ronan O'Gara as Ireland's record World Cup scorer.

For him [Alex Mitchell] to go onto that pitch he has to make some really tough calls under-pressure.

As a scrum-half, not even Antoine Du Pont goes on to a pitch and says I will win this on my own, Alex Mitchell has to mange the situation tonight.

    England v Argentina (20:00 BST)

Speaking to BBC Hereford & Worcester, former England captain Dylan Hartley said the class of 2023 should "go all in" during their World Cup campaign.

"When you get to play for England, you want to represent your family and make them proud and an extension of that is your friends and your community," said Hartley, who won 97 caps for England.

"Playing in the Six Nations and in Autumn internationals are great but you may only get one chance to play at a World Cup. It's a huge honour and you don't want to do it a disservice. Don't dip your toe in, go all in."

"The feeling I get from the players is one that people have written them off too early. I have a group of players that have performed on the biggest stages and I think they are looking forward to putting in a level of performance on the grass they can be proud of."

We haven't got the personnel, especially in the centres, to add that extra layer of attack. The best we have looked in attack was when Marcus Smith has come off the bench at 15. I was very surprised Steve [Borthwick] did not go with him to start at 15.
