"I'm just quite glad it came off."

  5. Gatland 'delighted with result'published at 23:02 British Summer Time 10 September 2023

    FT: Wales 32-26 Fiji

Speaking in the press conference, Warren Gatland said: "I'm absolutely delighted with the result.

"I thought there were lots of positives and some good learnings from today as well for us to take forward.

"I thought the way that we prepared and the game plan took a little bit of time and then we were 65 minutes in and I thought we were comfortable.

"We needed to control that and then we gave away some unnecessary penalties and lost a little bit of composure and allowed Fiji in, and with the team that they've got and individuals they can hurt you.

"I thought we showed some great courage."

We will be fine against Portugal.

This is going to take a lot out of the players, the amount of tackles the amount of effort, momentum is massive, a lot of people wrote Wales off before this game they deserve a huge amount of credit and that momentum is going to be massive going through the tournament.

  7. Postpublished at 22:56 British Summer Time 10 September 2023

    FT: Wales 32-26 Fiji

Wales wing Josh Adams told S4C:

We had a line-out in Fiji's half with 72 minutes on the clock, if we could have won the ball then our driving maul was working well and that would've been the game.

You can never write Fiji off and right at the end they could have won the game, we don't want many more games like that!

At half-time we were talking, I think Fiji had had 63 percent possession we were just defending through the whole first half.

The work the boys did was superb. We've worked hard for three months for this moment and we've started with a good win that puts us in a good position for the rest of the group stages.

Fiji captain Waisea Nayacalevu would not be drawn when asked in the press conference about the performance of the match officials.

"My honest opinion is that we made mistakes on the field and we paid for it. Wales took advantage," he said.

"We fight until the end, we couldn't get the pass away. I'm proud of the boys and their effort, looking out for each other for 80 minutes."

Fiji head coach Simon Raiwalui said: We had our opportunities, we weren't clinical enough.

We dropped a couple of balls on over the try line, a couple of disallowed tries.

We had a chance to score at the end with the pass. We had our opportunities, we just didn't make the most of it.

Wales had a couple opportunities off our defensive errors and scored a couple of tries, that was the difference.

Without doubt the best game of the weekend.

Wales made more than 240 tackles which shows how fit they are.

Wales captain Jac Morgan told S4C:

We made it hard for ourselves, fair play to Fiji they were brilliant tonight, every time they attacked they made it hard for us.

Our defence held out, our discipline let us down and put us under a lot of pressure but we dug deep and the victory means a lot to us.

We knew how much training we'd done and we knew there'd be moments that were hard but we showed how much it meant to us to defend as a line.

I'm just glad my cross-field kick came off! I'm sure I'd have got a slating if it hadn't.

We know what we can do as a team and we want to play as a team, we scored some nice tries and it's nice to see that come off.

This is a huge bonus to us, after the last few weeks and the warm-up games, this gives us a bit of momentum, Fiji were brilliant so to beat them gives us a lot of confidence.

    FT: Wales 32-26 Fiji

Wales head coach Warren Gatland said:

I'm delighted with the win but we made it a hell of a lot harder for ourselves that we needed to.

We made some dumb decisions the last 15 minutes but we come away with a win but there will be a through review process we need to go through, some of the discipline and messages we were trying to get on.

I'm a little bit angry about a few things but the positive is that we won.

We know what Fiji are like and what they are capable of, we just lost a little bit of composure there, they can come back at any time.

We changed a few things at half time. That period after half time when we talked about the tempo a few of their players looked tired and we looked comfortable and controlled.

Typical Fiji, they never say die and they get a sniff of something and they want to come back in.

Unbelievable, you've got to credit both teams.

Wales started the second half superbly well they looked in complete control but the threats Fiji poses and they didn't disappoint.

Let's credit Wales the amount of tackles they had to make through the game and still hanging on to the end, what an incredible game.

  20. Dan Biggar: 'It was absolutely exhausting'published at 22:17 British Summer Time 10 September 2023

    FT: Wales 32-26 Fiji

Man of the match, Wales fly-half Dan Biggar told BBC Radio Wales:

It was absolutely exhausting the last 10 minutes.

The clock felt like it didn't move, we put everything in to it.

Fiji came strong at the end, I'm really thrilled for this group of players, the work we put in the effort we put in over the last few month it puts us in such a good position in the group and I'm absolutely delighted, absolutely drained but the most important thing was the result.

Tonight was about everything but me, I wanted it so much for the team for the amount of welsh people here the amount of people back home the sacrifices of everyone.

I wanted it to be special for the group and if it is special for the group then hopefully it will be special for me in the end.
