  3. 'I am furious'published at 20:05 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

    FT: England 19-17 Wales

Wales head coach Warren Gatland, speaking to Amazon Prime: "I am furious actually, I am hugely disappointed but we found out about a few people today.

"It is just about some game management when we had them on the ropes and we just let them off the hook which is disappointing and answered a few questions.

"We gave away from soft penalties at key moments, with the yellow card as well.

"The biggest question of them answered is players knowing their roles in certain positions which was disappointing.

"We will see next week about selection but we need to be much better than we were today for next weekend.

"That was a game we should have won and we cost it ourselves."

On injuries to Dewi Lake and Taine Plumtree: "We will have to see."

  4. 'We'll wait and see what happens'published at 19:58 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

    FT: England 19-17 Wales

England coach Steve Borthwick, speaking to Amazon Prime: "Regarding Owen, we'll wait and see what happens. The same with Jack van Poortvliet [his injury], he'll get a scan. Rather than jump to any conclusions, we'll wait and see what happens.

"As this builds, I want to make sure we've got fundamentals in place. Our set piece, our kicking game and defence were in a strong position. The attack is the final building block and takes the longest to come, but that's what we're working on.

"We wanted to name the 33 [for the World Cup] this week so we had clarity, I know we'll need to adapt over the next couple of months."

  5. 'Big win for belief'published at 19:55 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

    FT: England 19-17 Wales

England fly-half George Ford, speaking to Amazon Prime: "Proud of the boys, when you have a plan in the week and a vision of the game, you don't envision like it happened there.

"I looked over the to sin bin chairs and that is a big win for belief and toughing it out.

"The critical thing is understanding what we had do next and thinking clearly, we had to come up with a plan and execute it and everyone had to understand what that plan was.

"Three guys off with 15 minutes to go is a tricky one, but the fight won us the game and it was unbelievable.

"I can assure everyone it is going to come and we will be 100% ready for the Rugby World Cup."

On Owen Farrell's red card: "We will get around him whatever the situation and whatever the outcome is, he is huge for us, he is the captain and the way he drives things every day is unbelievable.

"He plays the game on the edge, and as a squad we just have to focus on getting better.

"Whoever has the opportunity to play next week against Ireland they'll put their best foot forward and then going into the World Cup it will be the same.

"One thing's for sure - Steve Borthwick and the coaches will have the best plan going into the game [against Ireland next week]."

  7. 'We trust our game plan'published at 19:45 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

    FT: England 19-17 Wales

England back row Ben Earl, speaking to Amazon Prime: "A lot of hard work [during the game], the last seven weeks is proof of what we have done and then we worked right to the end.

"We speak about never stopping and we showed that today.

"We went down to 12 men at one point and we came back so we are really pleased.

"I think we just rely on what we have done and rely on the messages we have been given, trust our game plan and we have so many key leaders in this team.

"We are overwhelmed to win at home, we showed a bit of fight after the questions been asked of us after last week.

"Test match rugby certainly against Wales is not going to be pretty in the first 40 or 60 minutes, I don't know how many kicks there was, but it seemed like a lot.

"The game was going to open up at one point and unfortunately it opened up when we had 12 men."

I don't think England deserve it, it was a very messy game. There were so many cards and so many questions to answer on how to make the game tidier.

I think a lot of Warren Gatland's questions have been answered in terms of his final squad. Players like Joe Roberts and Tom Rogers didn't get a lot of ball to show their skills until the game opened up when England were down to 12. If I were either of them I'd be a bit frustrated.

    Rhys Patchell
Wales fly-half on BBC Radio Cymru

After Tomos Williams' try, Wales looked in complete control of this game, with more players on the pitch and more experience coming on. But England have somehow clawed their way back into the game thanks to Wales' mistakes.

I don't know if Wales lost that or England won it, I don't know what to make of that second half. The referee was somewhat disappointing and neither team will be happy with his decisions. The standard wasn't up to what it should be, especially considering this was England's best team.

That would have been a brilliant try, the level of skill from George Ford in the kick to Joe Marchant.

We've got another yellow card! Some of the cards have been obvious, Owen Farrell, Freddie Steward, they were cards that had to be given.

A lot of talk coming into this game would have been not if, but how soon Owen Farrell would overtake Jonny Wilkinson as England's all-time Test point scorer.

A ban on the horizon that could impact his involvement of the start of the Rugby World Cup after that yellow is upgraded to red.

Nine points closer to the 2003 World Cup winner's total of 1,179, Farrell will have to wait now.

Luckily for England, George Ford appears to be pulling the strings nicely.

11 of England's 12 on the pitch somehow drive the resulting line-out over as Maro Itoje brings them back to within a point of Wales with George Ford doing the honours from the tee.

    Game back on!
