Both back-row Taulupe Faletau and fly-half Gareth Anscombe will not be involved in any Wales' World Cup warm-ups but they are still in contention for selection for the tournament.

Faletau has a calf injury, while Anscombe has a thumb problem.

They will need to hope enough credit is in the bank if they are to head to France.

Steve Borthwick named his England World Cup squad on Monday but you can guarantee the Wales players will be doing backflips too to try to impress Warren Gatland today.

The Wales head coach will name his squad in the days after their final warm-up game with South Africa next weekend.

  9. 'We are going to get people out of their seats'published at 17:15 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

    England v Wales (17:30 BST)

Hooker Jamie George has made it clear to England fans what he wants to provide them today.

George said it was "about time" the players got "Twickenham bouncing".

"I feel like we are going to get people out of their seats at Twickenham, and it's about time," George said.

"We as players are fully aware that it hasn't been good enough over the last two years, and we have to make sure this Twickenham stadium is bouncing."

  10. Vunipola back to his best?published at 17:12 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

    England v Wales (17:30 BST)

Look who's back in an England shirt.

As the only specialist number eight in England's World Cup squad, Billy Vunipola is now essential to England's World Cup dreams, with today being his first game in white since November 2022.

Having not played since April because of a knee injury - and never under Steve Borthwick for England - is today going to be the first step in repeating his 2019 form, when he was undeniably world-class?

Borthwick said Vunipola is "as fit" as he has seen him in recent years, so that is a positive start.

Dewi Lake was keen to share news that he will be captaining Wales today with his family - but he could not reach them all at first.

"My mother [Louvain] and sister [Iola-Belle] were in Magaluf so I didn't get a reply from them for a bit because they were out clubbing," said Lake.

"My dad gave me a typical thumbs up emoji. They're made up. They've put a lot of effort in for me as well, driving at 6am to get you to under-18s or under-16s training.

"It's as much my achievement as it is theirs. They're the people who've put the time into me, along with coaches. From a young age, they taught me how to be who I am."

Lake added they will be in south-west London today.

I think I would have got the typical thumbs up emoji as well...

    England v Wales (17:30 BST)

It is the first team Steve Borthwick has selected since naming his 33-man World Cup squad on Monday.

Borthwick's reason for naming his squad three weeks before the World Cup deadline was in order to "build cohesion".

His team contains six Saracens players who won the Premiership title this year - which offers an indication to his potential World Cup spine.

So today for England it is all about players proving they should start in the opening game of the World Cup against Argentina on 9 September.
