She may have been Wales' tormentor in that first half but New Zealand wing and sevens star Ruby Tui has a lot of affection for Wales, the country and the rugby team!

27-0 is a hard place to be but Wales need to fix that defensive line and bring width, they've got to draw a line under this now for them it will be 0-0 coming in to the second half and trying to work on the performance.

  5. Half-time - New Zealand 27-0 Walespublished at 04:44 British Summer Time 28 October 2023

After a positive opening 10 minutes or so, things went from bad to worse for Wales after Nel Metcalfe was sent to the sin bin.

In all honesty, this has been the Ruby Tui show.

The winger has four tries to her name. Wales are yet to register on the scoreboard.

A big team talk to come from Ioan Cunningham.

The Black Ferns tap and go from a penalty just inside the Wales half.

Layla Sae gathers a chip kick as New Zealand look to go wide, but Carys Williams-Morris is alert to the danger and intercepts to bring the half to an end.

    Wow.

It's a lovely touch with the foot from Ruahei Demant who then kicks forward.

But the attack comes to a halt as New Zealand looked destined to charge down from their own half to score another try.

Better from Wales here as they gain some much needed territory from a penalty.

But the lineout is not straight from Kelsey Jones.

The execution just has not been there from Wales.

Wales head coach Ioan Cunningham spoke this week about the importance of taking opportunities, especially against world class teams.

Wales had another great attacking lineout there, but are penalised for breaking away from the maul.

    They'll be kicking themselves.

It would be good if Wales could get the ball out one phase quicker, it's predictable at the moment that when a forward catches the ball they just take it in and it's only when Lleucu receives first that is when she is going to kick or bring it out to the back.

It would be good if they could pass to the forwards and get it out to the backs a little bit earlier just to see if they can get outside of that Black Ferns defence.

Wales win a penalty as Kate Henwood is penalised for collapsing a scrum.

Lleucu George kicks to touch. Wales lineout just off the New Zealand five-metre line.

They look to get a good shove on, with Kelsey Jones guiding the ball, but Wales concede the penalty for obstruction.

So close and yet so far.

Hannah Bluck is a really physical player, defence is a massive strong point of hers but when you're playing against a team like New Zealand it is very hard to set your mark.

Carys Williams-Morris gathers the New Zealand clearance and looks to build an attack.

At long last, some possession for Wales.

Lleucu George lumps the ball into the skies and Jasmine Joyce puts Renee Holmes under pressure to force the knock on.

Much more like it from Wales.

    Mercifully, a boost for Wales.

They win a penalty just outside the New Zealand 22. Fine work by Hannah Bluck.

Lleucu George kicks to touch and Wales have the lineout around 10 metres out.

Wales are defending narrow and if you are defending narrow you have to get line speed that's the only way it's going to work to cut down that play.

At the moment they are almost playing like they've got players on the outside so they are not getting off of the line quick enough and are letting New Zealand play.

  18. Conversion missedpublished at 29 mins

Renee Holmes misses another conversion attempt from almost exactly the same spot as her past two efforts.

But it doesn't really matter as far as the scoreline is concerned.

Ruby Tui is having a party out there.

The Black Ferns' handling is once again superb.

They go from left to right, and Tui shows some lovely footwork to tease the Welsh defence, and she runs in her fourth try from around 15 metres out.

    Wales in disarray here.

Ruby Tui must think Christmas has come early.

She was completely unmarked on her wing, there wasn't a defender in sight as she dotted down for her hat-trick.
