  2. 'Not easy to back it up from Saracens'published at 22:27 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

    FT: Glasgow 19-28 Northampton

Northampton director of rugby Phil Dowson on TNT: "We knew Glasgow would come out in the second half and put us under tonnes of pressure, and we did well to just about keep them out.

"We were good in the first 30 minutes, and that's not easy to back it up from Saracens. The guys put in a cracking week in training.

"We'll see how banged up we are, and try turn things round. We've got Toulon coming with their mega stars a week today.

"Alex Waller spends his life with a sore neck as a prop, but we hope he'll be ok."

Glasgow will be hurt by that. They are a team that pride themselves on having a very good, nice attractive game of rugby.

Northampton fronted up defensively and battered them every time they came running. Glasgow just never seemed to get into the game at all. They tried lots of different things but I don't think they kicked particularly well.

On the flip side I thought Northampton were absolutely outstanding, Franco Smith even said that. They stood firm defensively and they kicked well, took their opportunities.

That will be a tough one for Glasgow to take because we didn't see a true reflection of them tonight.

  4. 'Hard work ahead for us'published at 22:17 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

    FT: Glasgow 19-28 Northampton

Glasgow head coach Franco Smith on TNT: "I'm disappointed with the first half. We looked like we were surprised by what Northampton brought.

"We know we've got to start better, and we've been speaking about it. There's hard work ahead for us.

"I must compliment them. They stopped our set piece really well, Mitchell was outstanding - his kicking performance was exceptional.

"We have all our processes in place - we will look at what needs to improve. It's small things, and hopefully we can get a win on the road next week."

Without [Sione] Tuipulotu they're missing some fire power.

Not bringing [Sione] Vailanu on until the second half was a big mistake, he was needed from the start.

The game was completely out their reach. They got what they deserved, I didn't think they deserved anything for playing about 10 minutes of rugby.

It's tough but it's what you play at the top of the game for.

  6. 'A really good win'published at 22:11 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

    FT: Glasgow 19-28 Northampton

Northampton fly-half Fin Smith on TNT: "We haven't won for a long time in Europe.

"We came out firing, shocked ourselves a little bit with how quickly we started. Tried our best to lose it at the end but that's a really good win on the road.

"We've fronted up twice [here and against Saracens] and are hopefully turning the tide a little bit.

"Courtney Lawes ain't bad, is he? We get a massive amount of confidence from him.

Smith was coy on his international prospects, being eligible for both England and Scotland: "Mum and Dad, all my relatives that live up here were watching."

  7. 'Glasgow didn't fire a shot'published at 22:02 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

    Peter Wright

The manner in how they lost will be what upsets Franco Smith - they didn't fire a shot for 60 minutes.

They didn't deserve any points. If they had gotten that last score and got the two points it wouldn't have been deserved.

When I saw the team come out I thought there wasn't enough ball carriers. Northampton handled the game really well though.

  8. Player of the Matchpublished at 21:59 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

    FT: Glasgow 19-28 Northampton

Northampton 13 Tommy Freeman has been named Player of the Match on TNT: "It was a tough place to come, but we played the conditions well and stuck at it.

"I want to keep learning the position, but it's really positive [playing in the centres] and I'm enjoying every moment.

"We can hopefully keep those levels up for the rest of the tournament."

Sebastian Cancelliere is dragged into touch, and Northampton come away from Scotstoun with a thoroughly deserved victory.

They have dominated in the tight, and taken their chances when they have arisen.

Glasgow were well below their best until the final 10 minutes - Franco Smith looks absolutely furious.

  14. Full-time Clermont 31-18 Edinburghpublished at 21:48 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

Edinburgh's EPCR Challenge Cup campaign starts with a heavy defeat as Clermont-Auvergne blow them away at the Stade Marcel-Michelin.

It was a slow start, but tries from George Moala and Alex Newsome put the hosts into a commanding position, before a small fightback from Edinburgh at the start of the second-half.

That momentum shift was quickly corrected by Clermont as Newsome ran in his second and Daniel Bibi Biziwu got the hosts' fourth.

Wes Goosen got one back, but Edinburgh had a five-minute window to steal this game and Clermont quickly slammed it shut.

    Clermont 31-13 Edinburgh

Clermont want more. They win a scrum penalty and go for the corner. It's put wide and then stabbed through brilliantly by Jules Plisson, and it slammed down by Delguy.

Or is it? Does it just hit the Argentinian's knee? He just needs downward pressure, he doesn't need control.

The on-field decision is a try... but it's quickly ruled out by the TMO. They have an advantage anyway! It'll come back...

Try Clermont 31-18 EDINBURGHpublished at 76 mins

    Wes Goosen

Edinburgh win the ball back and they're into deep Clermont territory again. Adam McBurney bounces off a few tackles, and the forwards rumble through the phases. Another advantage is coming their way.

It matters not! It's flung wide and despite two defenders trying to push him into touch, Wes Goosen gets it down. Too little, too late?

Mark Bennett is on kicking duty... and he just pulls it wide.

    Clermont 31-13 Edinburgh

Edinburgh win another penalty and go for the corner. Adam McBurney's throw is stolen again. That's three that Edinburgh have thrown away in good positions.

Cammy Scott has also gone off, finally succumbing to that hamstring injury that has plagued him most of this game. Mark Bennett is into 10...

Ollie Smith is almost in the corner again, and I fancy Angus Scott-Young might be in bother here.

He throws Smith over the advertising hoardings into the running track and pushes Smith's face into the dirt.

Just a penalty, which Glasgow kick to the corner...
