So another year of Premiership action draws to a close and it's been a good weekend to round things off.

Aberdeen got the ball rolling on Friday with a well-earned victory at Hearts.

Today's big match was at Ibrox where Celtic stretched their lead at the top of the Premiership to a whopping 19 points with a 2-1 victory. Moussa Dembele and Scott Sinclair hit back after Kenny Miller had opened the scoring for Rangers.

Ross County claimed the bragging rights in the Highlands after a 3-2 derby victory over Inverness Caley Thistle. Liam Boyce continued his one-man demolition job on Caley with his fifth goal in two derbies this season.

Dundee registered a fine 3-0 win over St Johnstone, while Motherwell struck late to snatch a point in the Lanarkshire derby at Hamilton. Partick Thistle and Kilmarnock finished 0-0.

Brendan Rodgers says Celtic's derby win at Ibrox was deserved as Mark Warburton urges his Rangers side to learn from their loss.

Former Rangers defender Craig Paterson and ex-Celtic goalkeeper Pat Bonner give their verdicts on the New Year's Eve Old Firm match.

“Today’s probably the first time we looked a bit nervy, a bit low on confidence from our goalkeeper to our striker. All over the park I thought we looked a bit low on confidence. When you’re like that you’re also low on energy. I thought County had a wee bit more energy around the park than us, a bit more fight, a bit more grit, which is disappointing from our point of view.

“This break is coming at the right time now. These lads need to get away, get their minds refreshed.

“For me starting in management in 2016, it’s been a poor half of the season from my point of view, from me and also from the players. We need to get ourselves refreshed, come back ready to go again. We’re only six points out of the top six which is our aim. We believe we’ll still get there. We need to come back better in 2017 than we were in 2016.

“I’m letting supporters down, I’m letting the board down, I’m letting the chairman down at the moment but believe me, I feel it. That will change. We’ll get better, I’ll get better, my team will get better in 2017 with a little bit of help, some players coming in.

“It’s really pleasing to get the monkey off our back that we’ve not beaten Inverness at home since we arrived here. I’m delighted for the players - I thought they put in a fabulous effort.

“I thought it was a keenly contested derby. Inverness had a lot of the game as well, but I think our chances were better than theirs and we deserved to win.

“Our home record has not been good enough. We’ve had several good performances and not picked up enough points. I can’t dress that up. It was so important we nailed that result today. Going into the break it just makes it a happier three weeks.”

Sportsound pundit Barry Wilson says there are "big hearts" in the Caley Thistle dressing room and they "are good enough to get out of this", but their form is a real cause for concern for manager Richie Foran.

Inverness have claimed just three Premiership points out of the last 30 available to them. In anybody's book that is relegation form.

However, they are still only a point off 11th placed Hamilton and four point off Kilmarnock so all is certainly not lost.

Liam Boyce scores twice as Ross County beat Inverness Caledonian Thistle 3-2 in the Highland derby.

Winger Chris Humphrey moves to Hibernian until the end of the season after being released by Preston North End.

What a thrilling Highlands derby that was.

Ross County looked in control for long spells but Caley Thistle refused to give up.

Liam Boyce gave the home side an early lead an struck again to put County 2-1 up after Carl Tremarco had levelled Inverness.

Martin Woods made it 3-1 after the break and the game looked up, but all credit to Caley Thistle, they refused to throw in the towel. Alex Fisher reduced the arrears late on to give them hope, but County held on for the win.

A terrific way to end the Scottish Premiership action for 2016 as the top flight heads into its winter break.

Inverness are giving this a real good go as they attempt to snatch a point.

Aaron Doran has a pop from long-range which has Scott Fox in the County goal diving low to his left to make the save.

Billy King is suddenly in the thick of the action.

He receives the ball and drives straight at the heart of the home defence and lets fly from the edge of the box but it's rising all the time and clears the crossbar by a foot or so.

Far more encouraging for Inverness though in the last five minutes.

Inverness have been fairly toothless in attack and it could be that a set-piece is their best hope of finding a way back into the match.

Greg Tansey lines up a free-kick from 30 yards and his strike looks set to test the keeper until Jay McEveley throws himself in its path and heads behind.

That third goal looks to have knocked the stuffing out of Inverness who have struggled to create in this second half.

When you're bottom of the table and two goals down at your local rivals it's a test of character.

If they somehow get out of this what a boost it would be, but it looks unlikely.

Martin Woods is full of confidence after scoring County's third goal and he attempts an acrobatic overhead-kick from 12 yards but his effort lacks power and Owain Fon Williams comfortably saves.
