  1. Kane eyes Hampden hat-trick...published at 16:00

    Scotland v England (17:00 BST)

Harry Kane, who will captain England, says his dream is to be crowned the best player in the world - and score a hat-trick at Hampden.

The 23-year-old was awarded the Golden Boot for the second successive season, after scoring 29 goals in England's Premier League during the 2016-17 campaign.

And now he has set his sights on improving on the international stage.

"I want to be classed in that [world-class] bracket, but I know I'm not there yet.

"I want to get back playing, hopefully get back scoring. If I score maybe a hat-trick [against Scotland] and a couple in the next game [against France on Tuesday], the ratio might not look so bad.

"As a striker, you can always change that. Five in 17 isn't a terrible record, but it is something I want to improve. Hopefully that can start at the weekend."

  6. Strachan under pressure?published at 15:47

    Scotland v England (17:00 BST)

Former Scotland midfielder John Collins on 5 live: "If Scotland lose the game but put in a spirited performance and play well then I think there is every chance that Gordon Strachan will keep his job. If we don't, then maybe he steps aside.

"He has got them playing good football but do we have the players? What has put pressure on Gordon is how well Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have done by reaching the Euros last summer.

"We have got a better squad than Northern Ireland and an equally good squad to Wales and the Republic of Ireland."

  7. Kane and able...published at 15:37

    Scotland v England (17:00 BST)

Scotland must keep England striker Harry Kane quiet and be strong defensively to win tonight, says Alex McLeish.

The former Scotland boss says nullifying England's attack at Hampden will prove key to their chances.

"We have to shut the door at the back. That's been our Achilles heel in a lot of qualifying games over the past two years," he said.

"Keeping Harry Kane quiet is another job - that's what we have to do."

  8. Increased securitypublished at 15:35

    Scotland v England (17:00 BST)

Police Scotland said extra security measures are in place ahead of the 2018 World Cup qualifier.

An increased police presence is expected at the game to support the large numbers of fans and armed police will also be on duty.

"Understandably, since the tragic events in London and Manchester, people are more aware of the current threat to the UK from terrorism," said assistant Chief Constable Bernard Higgins.

"There is no intelligence to suggest that Scotland or indeed this football match or any other event is a target but we have reviewed all forthcoming events to ensure our policing plans are robust."

  12. 'Everyone is buzzing'published at 15:15

    Scotland v England (17:00 BST)

Defender Charlie Mulgrew says Scotland relish being "massive underdogs" for tonight's qualifier.

The Scots have won only one of their last 10 meetings - and lost the return fixture 3-0 at Wembley in November.

But Mulgrew insists the Scots are "feeling good" after some hard training sessions before the Hampden Park match.

"It is a huge challenge ahead, England are a great team and we will be massive underdogs," said the Blackburn player.

"They are a top side. Every one of their players are world class and it is going to be difficult for us, but we are up for it and we will be ready for it when the game comes.

"I think everyone in the squad has confidence in their ability and that shows out there in training.

"The standard is very high, the tempo is very high. Everyone is buzzing. It is going to be a very difficult game, but it is one as a player you want to be involved in."

  13. England expects?published at 15:10

    (Scotland v England 17:00 BST)

England boss Gareth Southgate describes locking horns with Scotland as "special" and believes their Group F rivals will test his players.

"Everybody is fit and available. I'm really pleased with the level of training and we'll have to transfer that into the game," added Southgate.

"The players have embraced some new ideas this week around how we want to work and we're looking forward to the game, it's a great one to be involved with.

"It's a special fixture, but the key objective is to qualify for the World Cup, so we've got to keep that in our mind.

"But it's a game that will test us in every way and that's what we should be looking forward to."

Gordon Strachan's side are fourth in Group F at the midway point of the qualifiers. With five games played Scotland, on seven points, trail group leaders England by six, Slovakia by two and Slovenia by a single point.

The group winners go through to the finals while the best eight runners-up play in two-legged play-off matches.

Scotland hope their chances of reaching a first major finals since the World Cup in France in 1998 are still alive come September.

That is when the campaign resumes with an away tie against Lithuania and a home game against Malta, before October's concluding pair of games at home to Slovakia and away to Slovenia.
