Federer swipes away a backhand on match point and the Chatrier crowd rise as one, camera phones raised aloft, as the most popular Swiss in Paris makes progress. A brief chat with Fabrice Santoro and then it's adieu "Roger.... Federereeeerrr!"

Surely Djokovic is not going to make this hard for himself? There's no attempt to chase a Cilic forehand that lands on the whitewash, but the Croat has enough errors in him to keep the world number one in the game. Ooofff, Djokovic livid as yet another net cord gives Cilic break point, saved with a pump of the fist. Deuce.

Federer, by the way, will meet Ernests Gulbis in the last 16. Back on Lenglen, a Cilic double fault gives Djokovic the chance for a double-break, but it's wasted with a wide running forehand. On Chatrier, Maria Sharapova is just tying her shoelaces and heading outside.

"Federer is only going to get better. He had a blip in concentration when he should have been two sets to love up. Sometimes Roger just loses focus in matches. Tursunov gave Federer something to think about."

That will do nicely. Two match points, one required with a winner down the line. As wife Mirka takes a picture on her phone, Roger Federer completes a four-set win over Dimitry Tursunov and heads for round four. The Swiss perhaps hasn't quite been at his best - second-set wobble and all that - but he's in to the second week and will not doubt shortly be joined by Novak Djokovic.

Tursunov keeps his head above water, but his lifejacket is deflating. Federer has the bullets needed for one final push.

A rapid hold for Roger, just a game away...

"Tursunov manages to see off eight break points across two service games before Federer finally skips around his backhand and wallops a forehand into the corner to lead 4-3, and his Russian opponent does not look in any shape to stage a fightback. The trainer has basically camped on the corner of the court awaiting the next call."

Federer finally bashes down the Tursunov door. The Russian has repelled and repelled, but Roger has his man. A break up in the fourth, and surely the fourth round beckons.

"The fortunes of the super coaches are fluctuating like it's 1991, as the song goes. Stefan Edberg looks mildly miffed, which is the closest the Swede gets to a meltdown, as Tursunov saves seven break points at 2-2 in the fourth set. Federer troops back to the chair looking a bit bemused."

As all that was happening, Tursunov was hanging on against Federer, and it remains 3-3 on serve in the fourth. Elsewhere, Tomas Berdych has breezed through the first against Roberto Bautista Agut, while John Isner and Tommy Robredo are having a right old ding-dong on Court One. Isner takes the first on a tie-break - 15-13!

Two saved. Staring a whole through the fluffy sphere as it bounces on the red dirt. Huge second serve, back to deuce. The advantage, followed by a baseline battle of wills. Too big from Cilic, fist-pump from Nole, but that doesn't tell the full story. Helluvan escape.

Hang on. Djokovic rattled all of a sudden. Slip-sliding, three break points down.

  14. Djokovic breakspublished at 14:44 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

Key points happening all over Paris. Djokovic, perhaps smarting that he's out there a set longer than he wanted, is a sky-blue roar as Cilic goes long to hand the world number one a break. Is that the ball game?

Quick change of officials. Mike Henson has gone back to the lockers, Stephan Shemilt in for a little while. I arrive with Federer pressuring the Tursunov serve...

Dimitry Tursunov's physio is earning his corn. He has been summoned yet again to work on his bosses' thigh at the changeover.

The Russian is hanging tough though, holding up his end of the scoreline so far in the third.

"We saw so many flashes of brilliance in the first set from Cilic but he then fell apart. Cilic is a flashy player - he's taken the risks and served very well to win the third set. I really felt he earned that set. Djokovic looked a little flat."

"Cilic swats way a forehand and the third set is his. Djokovic whips off his shirt and buries his face in the towel on the changeover - two hours and 20 minutes gone and there's plenty of work to do. In contrast to Chatrier, the stands on Lenglen are typically well packed and there are few better courts in the world if the players serve up a thriller."

  19. Cilic wins third setpublished at 14:36 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

When a thick net cord snares a Marin Cilic forehand, but the ball sneaks over his side regardless, Novak Djokovic looks like a man who knows he is heading into a fourth.

Six-two and three set points to Cilic. Djokovic hits an almost exhibition-style drop shot as he plants his feet on the baseline. Cilic gives it the treatment it deserves, racing forward to whack it disdainfully cross-court for a winner.
