Has the level dropped a notch? Novak Djokovic nurses his serve through the game and Roger Federer, pumping long with a forehand, fails to pose much of a threat.

Roger Federer keeps his end of the bargain up. He needs to get into the Novak Djokovic serve though and, for the most part, that has been as impenetrable as a riddle.

Maybe the adrenaline is wearing off and the ankle is beginning to nag at Novak Djokovic.

The Serb lets a 40-0 lead slip to deuce and then wastes a game point as he strays long off the forehand. He has that face on though. You know the one. Glazed as though he is reducing the whole scene to just lines and the ball.

A soft-touch volley takes all the pace out of a Federer forehand for a winner and he packs away the game to consolidate his break.

  8. Djokovic breakspublished at 15:19 British Summer Time 6 July 2014

Novak Djokovic is finding the sweet spot of the forehand and the break that has been brewing is finally uncorked.

The Serb wallops one, clean as a whistle, fresh as a thistle, to take the game to deuce. Roger Federer, wary of the returning accuracy of his foe, double faults to hand over a break point. And his luck has run out now.

A searing backhand pass streaks away for a winner and Djokovic finally opens up clear blue water between himself and the seven-time champion.

"Federer may be making about 70% of his first serves but I reckon he has about 90% of the support on the Hill, where every swing of his famous racquet gets lusty applause. With every blade of grass covered late-comers are being directed to court two where the match is being shown on another big screen."

Novak Djokovic's grip on his own serve is vice-like. None of the trouble and strife that his opponent has had as he rams down more service power and holds in double-quick time.

You can feel Novak Djokovic fermenting with frustration at the changeover.

Dominant on serve throughout the opener and somehow he was edged out.

He re-emerges on a mission, landing a cheeky volleyed lob before he pins a stretching Federer at the net for 30-40 and break point.

Federer remains intact through that bit of turbulence, but he is rocking and rolling as Djokovic punches a double-handed backhand down the line for a second bite of the cherry.

Again Federer stares down his man from the baseline and Djokovic blinks first, cuffing into the net.

Djokovic slips, slides and stacks it on the baseline as he tries to turn too sharply and Federer still has been broken just once in the championship fortnight.

Blow-for-blow, point-for-point until finally the Djokovic forehand splutters with a fatal mistake. He buries into the net under relatively little pressure.

Up go arms in three-quarters of Centre Court. Roger's wife Mirka is amongst them. Her husband changed tack in the middle of that set, going back to the baseline and it has paid handsomely.

There is just no splitting these two. Not a cigarette paper in it. Djokovic turns up the heat and draws a backhand error to claim back the mini-break. Another Fed error off the same wing and a slamming first serve put Djoko ahead for the first time in the breaker. 5-4. Djokovic haring forward to lob a reply to Fed's drop-shot in the next. It is up, up and...long. 5-5. But Fed slips up in the next, flopping a forehand into the net.

Set-point at 6-5 on the Djokovic serve. Here we go. And roars from the crowd as Djokovic fires wide when forced to the fringes!

    Six-all and on we roll.
