Denmark's former world number one Caroline Wozniacki,, external who beat Shahar Peer of Israel 6-3 6-0 to set up a second-round meeting with Britain's Naomi Broady: "Good win for me today! Never easy when your match gets suspended in the middle of it. Looking forward to playing again tomorrow!"

  2. Serena Williams on Centre Courtpublished at 17:45 British Summer Time 24 June 2014

    Marion Bartoli
2013 Wimbledon champion on BBC TV

"Serena can't wait to win her first match to get over her French Open loss to Garbine Muguruza. She was surprised by the way the court played and she wasn't moving well and her opponent played amazingly - it happens against the top players and it happened to her. Serena is one of the great champions - I know her well and she is so friendly and hilarious and has a great sense of humour."

    John Lloyd
Former British number one on BBC TV

"That was a very good second set from John Isner. Dan Smethurst's first serve went off in that set, and he may reflect on those three break points he had in the opening game. It's not easy playing against Isner, who would expect to serve more winners. But I think Smethurst has played well, and the scoreline slightly flatters Isner."

John Isner snatches up the second set against Daniel Smethurst in a point that pretty much sums up the big man.

A walloped serve right down the middle is floated back to the baseline by a failing Smethurst. No matter. Isner lets it bounce and smacks a bounce smash away for a winner.

    Isner leads 7-5 6-3.

Rafael Nadal on BBC One after recording his 700th career victory: "It means I have had a very long and successful career and I am so happy for that. These matches are always so dangerous. I really know it is impossible to play my best in the first round. For sure the next round will be tough. The last three years I did not play much on grass and that affects your rhythm and confidence. My Lukas Rosol (his next opponent and the man who defeated him at SW19 two years ago) is a very dangerous player. Very strong and powerful. I will have to play very well if I am to win."

Super battling from Eugenie Bouchard on No.1, where she has come from a break down to take the first set against Daniela Hantuchova 7-5 with successive breaks. Highly rated, the 20-year-old, and she'll be looking to push past her third round showing on her Wimbledon debut last year.

With that win Rafael Nadal becomes the 11th player to reach the landmark of the 700 Tour-level wins. The 10 others? I'm glad you asked.

Jennifer Cochrane:, external "I just love @Wimbledon. Always feels like summer has arrived when it starts."

Shohidur Rahman:, external "Nadal is going to be be susceptible in the first few rounds because it takes him a while to get that confidence on grass."

  12. Rafael Nadal into the second roundpublished at 17:32 British Summer Time 24 June 2014

There was some spluttering off the startline, the gear changes were clunky, but the only thing that matters is that Rafael Nadal's Wimbledon 2014 campaign is off and running.

The two-time champion sucks up the best that the game Martin Klizan can throw at him and advances 4-6 6-3 6-3 6-3. And he is sent on his way with a standing ovation from the Centre Court crowd.

John Isner has cranked the recline lever to fold his giant frame into the driver's seat on court three. He leads Daniel Smethurst 7-5 4-1.

Gael Monfils has taken the first set against Malek Jaziri, but is behind in the second, 7-6 (7-5) 3-1. It is never simple with that fella.

"I'm very pleased with that win. She's climbed the rankings quickly after being out with mono glandular fever. A lot of games I couldn't get close to her, but when I did I made it count. I come into Wimbledon with confidence and really wanted to make the most of it."

  16. Postpublished at 17:25 British Summer Time 24 June 2014

Drama on No.1 as Hantuchova, serving for the first set, is dragged back to deuce by Bouchard and then to 5-5 as she puts an under-pressure backhand long. Muted fist-pump from Bouchers.

  17. Postpublished at 17:24 British Summer Time 24 June 2014

    John McEnroe
Three-time Wimbledon singles champion on BBC TV

"I totally disagree with the umpire because it is not the first time Nadal has gone over the 20 seconds to serve. Let these guys play. It seemed to come out of nowhere. Give the guy a warning you might be on the verge of doing it in the changeover. I hope it is not the reason Nadal dropped his serve but give Klizan credit."

  18. Postpublished at 17:24 British Summer Time 24 June 2014

Rafael Nadal is called for exceeding the 20 seconds pause between points, a crime he is guilty of almost all the time. It seems to throw the Spaniard and he hands over a service game to Martin Klizan who only has to hold from 4-3 down to pull level in the fourth.

But Nadal bites back like the terrier he is. He breaks in the very next game and serves for the match at 5-3 to the good.

Roger Federer has been talking about serve-volleying in the modern game:

"I think it's mental. You know, saying, 'OK, you're going to get passed. It's OK.' And being able to do it when the score is not in your favour. It's easy to serve and volley at 40-love, but can you do it at 15-30?

"I didn't serve and volley all the time [today]. That's not how I intend to be playing. But mixing it up a little bit could be the way to go."

New coach Stefan Edberg might have been brought on board to give him and little of that old school style.
