"Simona Halep won the last five games of the set and has turned the match around by getting used to Lisicki's power and being more consistent. Sabine has started to make some unforced errors and Halep has gotten into this match."

"Bouchard completes the task of winning the first set with relative comfort, a Kerber return dropping in to the tramlines. In a set dominated by the serve, Kerber failed to take the four break points that came her way in the seventh game, while Bouchard forced one more in the eighth and took it. That is the only difference."

  3. GAME AND FIRST SETpublished at 12:47 British Summer Time 2 July 2014

Thirty-six minutes on the clock and Simona Halep, as efficient and functional as a German-built saloon, has overcome that early speedbump to bag up the first set.

  4. Postpublished at 12:46 British Summer Time 2 July 2014

    Lindsay Davenport
1999 Wimbledon champion on BBC TV

"Halep is what I like to call a sneaky offensive player - because she is so quick she can get to any ball but she turns the tide quickly in rallies, takes the ball early and has great timing. She has made some great adjustments after being overwhelmed early on."

  5. Halep breakspublished at 12:44 British Summer Time 2 July 2014

Simona Halep has turned this tanker around. The Romanian grinds her way to 0-40 and although Lisicki saves the first break point with a cute angled dropper, she strays into the net to put Halep ahead on the scoreboard for the first time.

  6. Bouchard v Kerberpublished at 12:41 British Summer Time 2 July 2014

    Tracy Austin
Two-time Grand Slam champion on BBC TV

"One word I would use to describe Eugenie Bouchard is aggressive."

The Royal Box can't be done on the Trades Description Act today.

A king-in-waiting, a Duchess, but no sign of Georgie boy.

Simona Halep is taken to deuce in front of the dignitaries, but keeps a lid on the Lisicki power to hold on.

"What were we saying about the serve dominating? In the first six games of this match, no more than one point had been taken against the serve, but Eugenie Bouchard is forced to save four break points in the seventh. To be fair, the hard work is of the Canadian's making - a double fault, three loose forehands and a wild backhand to boot. She looks frustrated, but plays the break points beautifully - one drop shot in particular - on the way to an eventual hold."

    Lindsay Davenport
1999 Wimbledon champion on BBC TV

"After being overwhelmed in the early part of the match by Lisicki's power, Halep is now settling into the game and has found her serve."

  10. Halep breakspublished at 12:34 British Summer Time 2 July 2014

Oohh! That Sabine Lisicki power backfires on her owner, the German pumping long to concede the second of two break points from 15-40.

Something leach-like in the Halep game, she gets locked on and sucks the life out of her opponent with relentless percentage tennis.

  11. Postpublished at 12:31 British Summer Time 2 July 2014

Simona Halep is just about sticking in the slipstream of Sabine Lisicki's rapid start. Can she stick a spanner in the spokes of the German in the next?

"Halep is such a fluid mover and it doesn't matter what surface she is on, that is her main strength. But she is playing an experienced grasscourt player and you have to wonder if the fatigue from reaching the French Open final is possibly setting in."

  13. Postpublished at 12:28 British Summer Time 2 July 2014

The sweet spot on Sabine Lisicki's racquet is especially calorific.

The German catches one flush from well behind the baseline and the sheer power is enough to send a forehand streaking past Halep and into the backboards.

Halep needs to get her crampons on because there is a blast howling in her direction from the opposite end of the court.

Chris Fleming:, external So let's see, what I am up to today? Tennis and err... that's it! Lovely!

Craig Fraser:, external She's so young, and yet this could well be Eugenie Bouchard's year! She's got so much game already

Linda McDonald:, external If today's tennis is like yesterday's, I may have to lie down in a darkened room.

"No fireworks yet on a pretty empty Court One - on serve in the first with both the identical blonde ponytails of Eugenie Bouchard and Angelique Kerber comfortable in holding. Bouchard, twice a Grand Slam semi-finalist this year, has had an extra day off, but Kerber is fresh from that tense win over Maria Sharapova. Not an inch given by either player so far."

  16. Postpublished at 12:24 British Summer Time 2 July 2014

    Lindsay Davenport
1999 Wimbledon champion on BBC TV

"Lisicki is very relaxed out there compared to when I saw her in last year's final. That will be an unpleasant memory for the German because against Bartoli she just couldn't play the type of tennis she had played during the tournament.

"Yesterday's win over Yaroslava Shvedova seems to have relaxed her and she is back out here and looks comfortable. Her shoulder, which gave her some issues yesterday, is taped up but it doesn't seem to be causing her any problems."

  17. Postpublished at 12:23 British Summer Time 2 July 2014

Simona Halep has won the pair's last two meetings, but both wins came in three sets.

The Romanian is on the board in this one.

  18. Postpublished at 12:21 British Summer Time 2 July 2014

Sabine Lisicki has been on Centre Court so often over the past few years that the court-side chair is as comfy as her favourite easy chair.

    A solid hold.

  19. Lisicki breakspublished at 12:19 British Summer Time 2 July 2014

Toot-toot! Sabine Lisicki climbs into a return and sounds the hunting horn on the Halep serve. The German 19th seed seems about a a good half foot taller than her opponent and is able to get well over the top of the serve, crashing away a winner for a break point at 30-40.

That one doesn't stick. But one from advantage does. Lisicki has the early break and has settled the better of the two.

  20. Postpublished at 12:13 British Summer Time 2 July 2014

Sabine Lisicki's serve comes under a bit of pressure from Simona Halep in the opening game as the Romanian hops up to swat a couple of big returns for 15-30.

Lisicki rolls out some heavy artillery though to see her way through.
